Drexel current student here, ask me about life on campus, the struggles and the fun part etc. Here to answer anything but not everything ;).
Hi Supremo,
During your freshman year, how many hours of homework did you typically do per week? (and what is your major)?
As a biomedical Engineering major, typically I spent about 4 hours in total during the week on HWs if I had labs that week and about 2 hours if there were no labs.
A bunch of questions!
How are the dorms? DC is trying to decide between Honors Dorm in Millenium and Learning Community dorm in Myers.
For the meal plan, would you suggest more or less dining dollars? How are the dining halls / cafeterias? A review of each and their standard fare would be great.
How is Drexel regarding extracurriculars? Is there a lot going on at the Student Union, ways to get involved, etc? Since Drexel doesn’t have a traditional self-contained campus, what do students do on the weekends at school?
How hard is it to get your first choice in classes each semester? Any tips regarding registration?
What is the Drexel Experience class like?
Is the school as fast paced as people say? Do you feel like you are cramming to get everything in in one quarter, or is the workload adjusted for the shorter timeframe?
How safe is the area around campus - okay walking back to the dorms from the library at night, etc?
Millennium:
---------pros-------
- only Freshman dorm with private bathrooms
- Aesthetically appealing if you are into that
- Students in Millennium are seen as Nerdy because of its competitive nature and also since its houses the honors college and
- Dorms are pretty clean and serene.
---------cons----------
- Rooms are generally small compared to other Freshman dorms
- having stayed in Millennium Freshman year, there are lots of fire drills.
Myers:
-----------pros------------
- Houses most learning communities hence you will never get behind in class or miss a homework
- rooms are larger compared to millennium.
----------cons---------
- was supposed to be down this summer but Drexel accepted lots of freshman last year and needed more housing hence that was postponed.
- Bathrooms are shared and not the best in my opinion
for the meal plans, I will say its depends on you. if you like more to get more food from the dining halls then you should go for less dining dollars if not you should get more.
the dining halls are great when it comes to quality of food. Drexel has two main dinning halls where you can use meal swipes on your card and dining dollars( in case you wanna get something for a friend). There are numerous other cafeterias which accept dining dollars on campus eg Starbucks,
Drexel has a directory ( dragon link) made specifically for student unions so you can look through and join one if it interest you. There are frats as well if you are into that.
With weekends, there are lots of stuff to do n campus, from frat parties to events in center city and UPenn , which is nearby, there is definitely a way for you to get involved.
regarding registration, if you are in the honors college you should not have a problem with classes filling up since honors students are the first to register for classes. for regular students, the registration depends on the time ticket( time an date you are allowed to register) you receive during the previous quarter. unfortunately this is done by a lottery system so no one has an advantage.
since Drexel runs on the quarter sys (10 weeks/quarter) it is indeed fast paced but if you make your plan for the quarter and stay on top on classes I don’t see how you will not make it.
regarding safety, there is campus safety which is very good when its goes to security, they are all over campus so you will definitely be able to get in touch with one wherever whenever. Drexel has a partnership with UPenn campus security as well and hence this makes security on and off campus pretty great .
In case you are still checking…two questions for you. With the quarter system and co-ops, do you lose your summer junior and senior year?
Also, have you heard anything about the nursung program? It seems like a respected program but has very mixed reviews…a lot admitted to the program but many failing out? Thanks!
@Supremo hey, I’m an international student who just got into Westphal for Dance ! Do you know any dance majors and/or what life in Westphal is like? Also, I’m trying to decide between Myers (Westphal LLC), Towers and Millenium (not sure if I’ll get this one though, because I’m not applying for Honours college until next year…). I heard Towers/Myers were ‘party dorms’ which, I’m not a partier, so would it be weird for me to live there?
Also, on that note, what’s Drexel like for people like me who don’t necessarily enjoy the party scene (technically I’ve never really been to a party, but I’d rather not be forced to drink, etc)?
Thanks
