Ask A Gator!

Any advice for some that intends to bring a bike? Are the bike racks in the resident halls under some sort of overhang so they do get wet/rust during the night?

Also are their any sidewalks where you’re not allowed to ride your bike (e.g. sidewalks in Reitz Union North Lawn)? Or are those too crowded to ride your bike in between classes?

Are the buses useful if you want to get to another part of campus for class during the 15 minute break?

Do you know any easy classes that meet the Gordon Rule WR?

Generally speaking, does an applicant have a greater chance at admissions if their application indicates undecided as apposed to a specific major ?

Are the activity cards the area government sells worth buying? Do you know whether the two-dorm rooms in Murphee hall have carpet or tile? Thanks!

Sorry the delay, y’all! Not sure if your questions have been answered but here goes anyway…

I honestly don’t know the exact threshold. You should call the registrar’s office if you want a precise answer. Basically I think they make a delineation by semester standing. So for eg. a first semester sophomore with 30 credits will have a lower priority than a second semester one with 47. You’ll be considered a 1 semester junior / a 5th semester student and, while I can’t predict exactly what date you’ll be able to begin registering, it should be a good slot - by the 2nd week of November sometime probably.

This is all based on my memory of my time as a junior in undergrad…sorry if I’m a bit rusty. I always think the best times to get courses are during drop/add anyway!

I’d recommend bringing a fairly inexpensive bike. There’s a decent amount of theft on any campus so don’t go out and spring for a $800 mountain bike…anything that gets you around should suffice. Safety is important so a u lock is ideal. Also, never leave your bike in the same place for too long (I mean like weeks and weeks, not just a few hours/days). Bike racks are all over campus so I’m sure some are under overhangs but in the residence and dining halls I can’t remember which (I know not all of them are though).

UF/Gainesville is very bike friendly. There are few areas on a campus where biking is prohibited excepting like loading docks, etc. There’s nothing off-limits on the Reitz union lawn…between classes that area, and, really the whole campus, will be swarmed with bikers. You should go slower there or in any other crowded area but you don’t need to stop biking. Just make sure you don’t hit any walkers!

Buses are useless during the 15 minute break. Unless it’s like your first class of the morning and you’re coming to main campus from Lakeside or something. Otherwise just bike! Or skate or even rollerblade…heh.

Hmm. There are many, many easy WR credits. Human sexuality, History of Jazz, the technical writing courses, Intro to Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation of Literature, General anthro, etc. etc. The list goes on and on and on…

No, it really doesn’t unless you apply to a limited access program and/or something art related which will at least be partially based on a portfolio, audition, etc.

I don’t think getting an activity card is really worth it. I personally never had one nor did any of my friends except one. I don’t think it offered too many perks and the ones it provided were easily taken advantage of with my friends card. The Gator 1 will get you into every event on-campus anyway. Then again the activity card is pretty cheap, right? Might as well get one…

Murphree- At least when I was crashing there in 2006-2007, it was all tile. It’s a great dorm!

I just wanted to let you all know that I might trade in my personal account and undergo the validation process so CC has a real life admissions com rep of UF! The thing is, I’ll no longer be able to be candid, talk about the hot party spots in Gainesville or speak from a students POV.

Until I undergo the validation process, please PM me with any questions about your stats, advice on the SAT, etc.

Any thoughts on that idea from those who might actually still read this thread?

Hi, I have two questions! :)

I applied to UF on August 3rd as a Freshman to be admitted for the Fall 2012 semester. Do you have any idea as to when I might hear back with a decision? I’m really nervous/anxious…

Also, I made a Chance-me type of thread, but haven’t gotten many responses. You seem like a very reliable source, though I know you can’t guarantee admission. With your background with freshman admissions, could you please check out my stats in the link below and let me know what you think my chances will be? :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1191842-i-am-not-turtle-fish-rawrawrawr.html

Thanks in advance!

When you get to UF, make sure to use [GatorSchedule.Net .:. Course Search](http://www.gatorschedule.net) to find classes!

Best way to find courses that match your criteria :)

You should have a decision by the second week of February 2012. Make sure you get your app in by the deadline!

I posted a response. Feel free to PM me or ask any questions in this thread!

@MulariRath

Cool project!!

Thanks! :)

Please elaborate on freshman Spring acceptance rather than the normal fall acceptance;
What are the average stats, how and when does UF notify you regarding your
delayed entry and do you have a site that explains in detail how this delayed start works ?

Sometimes a student will be offered deferment to the Spring term if there are no available spots for Fall or Summer B. The candidate should still otherwise meet the standards for admission to UF. The university doesn’t officially publish the stats for Spring admits but they are generally on par with the rest of the incoming class.

Those offered deferred acceptance are notified during the same time period as all other admits – within the first two weeks of February. There’s not too much information online about Spring admission. If you’re offered Spring, I’d recommend contacting the various departments to get everything lined up (the registrar, housing, etc.).

Hey drg0nz0, I was wondering if you could help me out with a project that I have to complete for an English class I’m Taking in high school. The basis of the project is for the students to ask several questions to a college student who is not a freshman that studies at the college that the high school students wants to attend. Unfortunately, I do not actually know anybody that goes to UF, so I thought you would be the right person to help me out. The questions are as follows:

How much writing are you required to do per week?

How is the writing graded? What do professor expect to see in your writing?

How long do you typically have to write papers and what are the required lengths?

What are typica1 lengths of reading assignments? How long do you have to complete those?

Do you have to write in non-English classes?

How wou1d you compare studying for tests in college to the studying you do in high school?

How do professors handle late work? How rigid are they with deadlines?

How do you take notes for classes? Are notes important?

Is there any assignment that you did in high school, that you did not like doing, yet found it was helpful to your college experience?

How much time do you spend working outside of class?
Thanks in advance!

Hi drg0nz0, thanks so much for doing this thread! I’m just wondering what you think my chances of getting in are?

I’m transferring from a FL CC with a 3.36 GPA (2 A’s in that GPA were retaken w/ grade forgiveness, which I heard UF doesn’t honor). I finished my AA requirements after this past spring, but I’ve stayed at my CC for summer/fall to finish my pre reqs. I will have 81 credits after this fall semester…

I applied for journalism in July. I heard UF’s journalism program is one of the best in the country. There are 9 pre reqs to choose from, but only 4 are required. By the end of this semester I will have taken all 9 (just wanted to better my chances…)

I know my GPA is nothing spectacular. I did pretty poorly my first 3 semesters. Wasn’t motivated, didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go, etc. My 4th semester (this past spring) I realized what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I took 8 classes and got straight A’s, took 2 more in the summer and got A’s in both of those as well. My GPA went from a 2.87 to a 3.36 after that. I’m hoping UF will see that and recognize that I’m smarter than my GPA says lol. Not everyone leaves high school knowing what they want to do you know?

Anyways, bottom line- AA transfer student from CC, journalism, 3.36 GPA. Thanks so much :)

Also, I’m pretty worried about transferring and moving in the spring. I’m planning on getting a student apartment close to campus and getting 3 random roommates, but since it’s spring I really don’t want to get stuck with moving into an apartment that people are already living in. I feel like the majority of people move in the fall, and come springtime there aren’t a lot of free apartments. I could be completely wrong, I’m just worried lol. I’m also a little nervous about meeting people. I do have a lot of friends in Gainesville, but the majority of them are in sororities so I’m not really counting on hanging out with them too much. How easy would you say it is to meet people as a transfer student? Freshman have that bond of being freshman… but junior transfers don’t exactly have that haha. Anyways, this was terribly long! Thanks for any input :)

Thank you for this thread! You mentioned Hume dorms and the honors program. If you get into Honors, do you automatically get into Hume? What are the qulifications for the Honors program…and if you are accepted to UF, will you know if you are in the Honors program along with acceptance to the University…in time to make your decisions? How, in general, do you increase your chances of getting the dorm you want? UF seems to have a lot to offer, but is huge and has such a party school reputation, it’s a real concern for those who are not ‘big crowd’, ‘big party’ types. It was good to hear that there may be a place for those students at UF. Any more input along those lines would be much appreciated.
Thanks again!!

shoboemom, yes, if there are spaces in Hume Hall when it’s your turn to select housing. The way housing works is you paid that $25 housing payment after your application. So people get to choose where they live based chronologically on when that payment was. Best guarantee you’ll get the dorm you want = do your housing stuff early - really early. And no, the Honors decision comes after the general University decision. But I do believe it comes before the decision deadline.
And I’ve only been here 3 weeks but it seems like it’s only the #1 party school if you want it to be. If you don’t want to party, it’s easily avoidable. It’s not like it’s in your face, you know?

Can you please chance me for summer b 2012. Im in state, and Asian.

3.91 gpa w 3.42 gpa uw
(I took 7 ap classes/2 duel enrollments/ and 4 yrs spanish)
Sr year schedule I have 5 aps including ap calc ab

sat 1250/1600 1840/2400

How do i look for summer b?

i don’t understand why people are posting questions here and not in their own thread.

^ “Ask A Gator!” is somewhat inviting to questions…

I just applied for Fall 2012 and wanted to know your take on my chances of acceptance. I know they may be somewhat low, but I have extracurriculars that I think back me up (Children’s Congress, officer positions in clubs, 102 community service hours). Also, I’m a rising senior. And I’m instate. Let me know what you think!

Unweighted: 3.31
Weighted: 3.69
SAT (CR+M): 1270
ACT: 28 (retaking in October)

I am also taking 2 APs and 4 Honors classes right now, and have all As and one B in my AP Lit class. If I keep up those grades, will that boost my chances?

THANKS!

can you send an updated transcript to UF showing the first semester of senior year??

Hey all! I’m still not sure whether I want to validate my account or not- if I do, I can no longer speak candidly. For now, if you could PM me any specific admissions questions, I’d appreciate it.

This post will be broken into two parts but I did get to everyone!

I would be happy to help you with your questions provided the deadline hasn’t passed! Send me a PM, let me know and in turn I’ll send my answers via PM as well.

I’m sorry but I’m not well versed in transfer admissions (they’re approved by the individual colleges). I can only speculate. Your upward trend should look good and it helps that you’ve taken all your pre reqs. But UF’s journalism program is extremely difficult to get into. I remember 2 or 3 years ago, they stopped taking UF students who wanted to transfer majors to the college of journalism. It’s consistently ranked in the Top 10 of programs. It is a reach but go for it!

You can find some great apartments even for Spring, if haven’t signed yet (I can PM suggestions if you wish). But rooming with some other girls might be best. My recommendation would be to join clubs you are passionate about, get to know your roomies, start study groups, talk to people in classes, volunteer on-campus. Be active. I’m not sure how it is to be a transfer but these are some of things I did as a freshman and ended up making friends. I hope it works for you!

Good luck!

** jaredk ** answered some of your questions well but I can elaborate. It can’t be said enough: APPLY EARLY. You do not automatically get a space in Hume or even on campus even if you are accepted into the honors program. I suggest that as soon as you’re accepted into the university, get your housing squared all away!

UF will send you a letter of acceptance to the honors program and to the university at the same time or time period. So you will have plenty of time to line things up.

The qualitifications needed for the honors program can be found here

Jared is right. UF is more “work hard, party hard”. You will find a niche and there is more to do than party. Personally I never partied freshman year, then went through a party/club phase and stopped all that by my senior year. Party or no – I’ve personally never been bored. Though I am biased…I’ve been here for six years!
