Let's start a post with good advice for 2012-2013 (or beyond) applicants to the University of Florida. Most of you are going through the process now and I'm sure you have had those, "I wish I knew" moments. So now share them with prospective baby Gators!

Always remember to apply to UF Housing AS SOON AS you apply to UF. Do not wait until you’re accepted.

The date that you apply to live on-campus sets you up in line to select your room for the Fall. You will most likely not get your first pick if you wait until November or later.

Many of the colleges at UF have duel Bachelors/Masters programs. You’ll graduate with both degrees in only 5 years (or less). This is one of the best things you can do - graduate ahead of the curve and increase your chances for an awesome job!!

I wish I had done that! I didn’t find out about it until the end of my Junior year… and it was too late to apply.

i’ll second the dual degree considerations. its not applicable to the vast majority of students, but at least make sure you’re aware of possible dual degree opportunities you might be remotely interested in. that way you have about 2+ years to make a decision (and it could very easily take that long).

Work really hard on your essay! Start fleshing out ideas now if you are applying in August or Sept. I know someone recently admitted who didn’t have high ACT/SAT scores at all…I think the essay really got her accepted. Here is a great site to have your essay critiqued for free:

Make sure that you have the prerequisites for your major complete or they WILL reject you. Oh, UF just had to deny me out of all places.

Don’t wait until November 1st to submit your application. Chances are, a lot of other people will wait until the last minute and the server will crash. Do it a week before. Do it a few days before. But DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT wait until the night before/day of to submit your application. If you do, I’m sure everything will be okay but you’ll be stressed for a few days since the site will most likely go down and your application will be marked as received on Nov 2. It happens every year. Don’t get caught up in that mess. Here’s a tip, Pretend as if each of your college applications are due a week before they actually are and submit them then. That way, if there are any problems, you have a whole week to get it resolved.

Agree with sciencegurl.

My application got marked as November 2nd and I had to email the admissions representative for my area. I looked like an idiot and he further reinforced that by basically scolding me for submitting so late, haha. But in the end he said my application was still on file.

Try to get some AP credits while you’re in highschool so that you can save some money while you’re at UF - but don’t stress about it too much. Have at least 2 so that UF Admissions is impressed with your application, but make sure to keep your GPA up as much as possible. That’s what’s most important.
Trust me - you won’t want to leave once you’re at UF!! :)

Bring Mapquest so that you don’t get lost and have to ask someone for directions.

I like this thread! More, please! :)

Also, is it okay to submit more test scores (retake of ACT) after the rest of the application is sent? Like a few weeks to a month later? Thanks!

Quick question…is the UF gpa the same as our bright futures gpa’s???

Girl - Yes, that’s fine. I did it.

Bdale - I don’t know if they’re exact, but its a strong indicator.

Do Summer B. I am here right now & it was the best decision I ever made. Trust me, come for summer.

Thanx rlynch, because my bright futures gpa is a 3.8 and I heard the chances of acceptance to uf go up drastically if its at least a 4.0. My uf gpa is a 3.95 and I was wondering if it would be worth taking flvs classes to boost it or just put that time toward studying for the ACT and community service. Oh and for summer b, I toured usf and fsu over the summer when summer b was in session. Both schools were nearly ghost towns and I wondered if that was the case at uf. And are there any benefits of choosing summer b over fall.

Anyone? Lol

In 2010 I think 91% of applicants with over a 4.0 were accepted, so, yes, having a higher GPA probably does help your chances. You’re close though, so I’m not sure it’d be worth taking an extra class.

And I’ve got quite a few friends at Summer B right now at UF and they’re having the times of their lives. They said there’s parties every night, and they’re taking easy classes which makes it feel practically like a vacation.

As far as choosing Summer B over Fall; it’s supposed to be easier to get accepeted into the Summer term than Fall. If you’re not coming in with a lot of AP credits it’d be a good time to finish some GE’s. Basically, other than the difference in acceptance, choosing between fall and summer is a personal choice.

Are u allowed to go for summer b freshman year and start the following year in the fall?

idk the answer to your last question but I definitely recommend coming Summer B. I’m here now and it is amazing. Nothing like a ghost town, and I am actually apprehensive about how many more people are going to be here in the fall >.< There are parties every night, the classes are manageable depending on the subject, and it is easier to get in if you apply for the summer term

That sounds like a good route to go. Does uf round up gpa’s because I’m barely away from a 4.0. And would it increase my chances to apply just for summer b or apply for fall and take my chances with getting deferd to summer b. And also, I’ve passes all of my AP exams so far (5 of them) will that play any role in admissions?? And would u consider class rank to them more important than strength of schedule and # of Ap’s. Because by the time I graduate i would have taken at least 10 Ap’s and lots of honors but my class rank isn’t very high because I go to a highly ranked public school. :(
