This thread is for accepted or waitlisted students to ask questions about Kent School. I am currently a senior at Kent (and also a tour guide so I know all the stats). This thread is also open for any current/past students or parents to help answer questions as well. I hope you #chooseKent (and how cool were those VR goggles??)

My sister was accepted and received a package with the google cardboard VR goggles. The video is pretty cool.
My daughter was accepted, and we all dug the VR goggles! She’s reading the handbook now but says she doesn’t have any specific questions yet! I have a question about dorms - are freshmen/new students all in one dorm or are they sprinkled throughout? And how did you find the roommate match-up - did the questionnaire do a pretty good job?
@Susieknits There is one dorm that is for freshmen called North Dorm (it houses the most students of any dormitory in the North-East), but all grades also live in this dorm. Once you become a sophomore you can live in Case Dorm, and once you are a junior you can live in Hoerle Hall for one school year. With the roommate match-up I honestly do not know how well it works. I was a new junior and pretty sure I was placed with my roommate because she was a returning senior who needed a roommate. But this year my roommate and I were placed with a new junior who we get along great with. I know the system is completely different for freshmen. From the freshmen I have spoken with, most enjoy their roommates and go on to live with them the next year as well. There is always the option to switch if a match up is really not working out and you typically choose your roommate for your second year.
That’s super-helpful! Thanks. I did think of one other question - I assume most students use the laundry service? Does it take a week to return? Just wondering about how many days’ worth of clothes, sets of towels, etc. to pack.
@Susieknits Laundry from the service is only once a week, but it does come back every two days. Laundry drop off is by 7:45 AM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Friday laundry does come back the next Monday however. There is a laundry place in town but it’s a bit of a hassle to get there.
My son has been accepted to Kent. I also have a son at Hotchkiss. I have a few questions:
- Are the dorms carpeted at Kent?
- Are triples pretty commonplace? Or is it rare to be assigned to a triple in the form?
- How’s the food? What are some of your favorite meals in the dining hall?
@Hotchymom Sorry to be so late on this post - The dorms are not carpeted at Kent. Most dorms do have triples and I will not say it is out of place to be put in one (North is now a male dorm and the first floor has a lot of large triples that are very nice rooms). The other male dorms also have triples and I have heard from boys about living in triples their freshman year. As far as food, Kent had the best options and food of any school I toured (Brooks, Westminster, Pomfret, Groton, Blair). I am a big fan of the stir fry station and the pizza recipe was changed this year (and is very popular). Our hot food bar is hit or miss (I like pulled pork, salmon, and spaghetti and meatballs day). Kent is very good about offering options (there is always pasta, stir fry, and a salad bar - for lunch, there is a panini station and pizza).
I wouldn’t be shocked to learn that one reason the Kent food is so good is to curtail deliveries from all the restaurants just across the bridge in town. Congrats if you recently went through your Prize Day, @randomdare !
