@packalldwy–if you a freshmen, it doesn’t really matter because you won’t take many (or any) business classes your first year. I would stay on South just because it should be a great experience, is close to good food options, close to the Gateway, and is a bit more scenic than North.

@gallivanter–when I stayed over for the summer, a bike was quite handy, although definitely not necessary; I’m not sure if there is a storage facility, but plenty of bike racks. The bathroom should be cleaned once a week if I remember correctly. Maybe even once a day (weekdays only) if it is like S campus dorms were, I forget…but leaning towards once/week.

@GoNavyOSU: The quads in Morrill are the same size as doubles there; as a double, space very plentiful, but with 4 it will definitely be a bit limited. There will not be room for a TV in your room unless you are extremely creative, but the common area is great for a TV. Make sure if it’s your tv that you trust people there and that they CLOSE the door. No residence halls have kitchen’s in the room, but as a communal kitchen I believe that Morrill and Lincoln share one that is on Lincoln’s main desk floor.

Living in residence halls on a meal plan, I don’t think I ever used a kitchen to cook a meal, so don’t worry about it at all.

I’m a transfer student and I got a fairly nice schedule this coming fall. Only downside is that I have 15 minutes to get from Jennings Hall to Howlett Hall. After that I have 15 minutes to get from Howlett Hall to Smith Lab. Howlett is on the far west side of campus and I was wondering if it’s possible to actually get to Howlett in less than 15 minutes? Or would you rather have me buy a bike?

PS, I got assigned to Jones Tower this fall. Any comments on the dorm overall?

@JotaOSU: That’s a fairly hefty walk, I’d say it will take 20+ minutes…however, there is a CABS bus route that goes fairly close to all locations. I believe Mack Hall on the Jennings leg, and an Ag Campus stop near Howlett, and a central campus stop for Smith. It’s definitely do-able without a bike, assuming you can get good bus timing. I would also talk to the professor to see if they start on-time. Often, classes on the fringes of campus will start late/end early. A bike would definitely be helpful though if you have easy access.

Jones Tower is a great North Campus location–literally right next to Fresh Express / Burritos / North Commons and is close to central campus classes. Also not too far of a walk from High Street, although the Gateway part is a bit of a hike.

@Whateverhappens: I took Intro to Philosophy (101H I think?) and it’s a very interesting course; our Professor (Ben…something?) was easy to get an A-/B+, hard to get a solid A. I got an A- personally, and so did my genius friend (36 ACT, Engineering Honors, going to Berkley for grad school). Great class, though.

Ah I see. Taking a bus might be a bit riskier, assuming I come out of class just when the bus leaves the stop. I think I’ll buy a bike, a cheap one. Any places where I can get a bike? Any Kmart/Targets nearby?

Thanks for the reply!

PS. I’ll have to see who my professor/s is though. All I have for my instructors is “Staff”.

I’m pretty sure that Ben Caplan (remembered it) was the only one that taught the honors version of Intro Philosophy, he was a cool guy. There is a Target right off of West campus (Called Lennox) and a Walmart about 15 minutes away. Make sure to get a good lock and if possible, one where the seat doesn’t easily come off. Check with Jones to see if they have a bike room, and if so, a bike room lottery (to actually use it).

Alright, I’ll check the stores once I get to Columbus.
Unfortunately Jones does not have a bike room. I’ll probably just have to remove the bike seat and leave the bike outside.

OSULolz-- what do you know about any of the folllowing: Fisher advisor Jane Palmer? CRPLAN 3500 instructor-Abraham G Ndungu? POLISCI 1200 instructor Emily Fern Lamb? Soc 1101 instructor Townsand Price-Spratlen? THANKS!

OSUMEngineer, yep, thanks. No data on two, minimal on another, decent amount on the soc prof (not great reviews, but not too tough, will depend on kind of student u r I guess?!). Was wondering how accurate the comments are…thanks!

Unfortunately, I won’t be very helpful today.

1) Adviser: I have never heard of that adviser, but it honestly does NOT matter who your ‘official’ adviser is. For things like walk-in appointments, emails, etc. you can see nearly any adviser that is available and you can request whomever you would like during walk-ins. My adviser was Kim Bader and I thought she was great…never had any problems and responded relatively quickly to emails. I believe she was an honors adviser only.

2) I am not familiar with any of those professors (or classes due to the semester switch). I would assume Polsci1200 and Soc1101 are both intro classes and therefore have a bunch of different professors teaching; for lower classes like that, they are typically standardized and professor doesn’t make a ton of difference. If not up yet, try in the next few weeks to check the student’s Carmen page where classes are listed…professors will start to post information such as the syllabus and you can get an overview of how the course will be in terms of assignments, grading policies, etc.

3) RateMyProfessor CAN be good, but always take it with a grain of salt. As in any comment system, often only extremely negative or extremely positive opinions are posted and many are based off of opinionated terms (easiness, helpfulness, etc). More helpful information is when users post grading policies, actual assignments, and things like that that are actually quantifiable.

@ OSULolz-
There seems to be things that need to be done each term and things done once a year. In your experience-can you list them out so it’s all in one place? I have the following-let me know if I got anything wrong or whatever else I didn’t mention:

Yearly:
Living arrangements
Meal plan
Opting out of Student Health Insurance

Every term:
Register for classes (obvious one)
Order textbooks
Statement of financial responsibility

What about the Selective Service number for in-state students. I know we ran into that for this first semester. S was being charged non-residency status because OSU did not have that number. We added it and took almost $8,000 off his total for this first semester. Do they need to add that every term?

What was the biggest class that you had? How was it? Having a business major and econ minor maybe you took principles of microeconomics and can tell me how that course was. It’s a requirement for my major and my class has over 400 seats filled.

Hey, sorry if this has been asked before-- but I bought my student football tickets in a hurry and selected the student seating option. Am I still able to request seating? When I bought the tickets, I didn’t have anyone in mind to sit with, but now I’ve found people who wish to sit with me.
