Ask an OSU Senior

Orb are these reserved tickets or in blocko? My daughter and her friends have reserved seats and they formed a large group - you can do it online. But if it is blocko and your friends have blocko there is no need to form a group as you can sit wherever on that section.

But for the reserved seats, you will need to form a group. Maybe someone can explain it better than me…

“1) Best time to apply is AS SOON AS SCHOOL STARTS. Sooner the better, just have your student ask the front desk at their dorm. Also, apply to more than one dorm, you DON’T have to live there to work there. I worked 3 years at a dorm next door”

So we can’t apply yet? And what other jobs would you recommend?

mspearl, the tickets are just regular student tickets, not reserved… They were sold out of Block-O by the time I went to go buy the them.

Yes, they were also sold out of blocko for my daughter. You can form your own group. My daughter and her boyfried and the kids from her highschool are all sitting together. I think you do it online or call tomorrow and I am sure someone at OSU can direct you.

Have fun at the games!

@NervousNellie1: I don’t think selective service is every term since it won’t ever change…

In terms of your list, I’ll think about it and get back tomorrow. Repost if I forget

@cazee88: Probably around 200 would be my biggest. In my experience, those classes are usually the least necessary to attend as professors post notes online. For both Intro to Macro/Micro I took the honors version and those courses are limited to 30 students each, so I could not tell you for sure how it is. I did have a friend that took the class and the curve was a bit…not fun. It was based on a bell curve; he got a 91% in the class and ended up with a B-. Note that every teacher may be different.

@OrbInfinite: If your tickets are NOT Block O, you can group them with other students. Check email to make sure this information has not already arrived…if it has not yet, it will.

@OptimisticOSU: Most Resident Managers will not hire before school, but feel free to contact yours to at least get your name out there. Other campus jobs include: Dining services, computer lab proctors, and library assistants.

Not 100% sure but someone said football groups must be done by 4:30 today (monday)

Thank you guys! I was able to join a group, just in time too.

OSULolz – Is there a lot of used textbook selling that goes on among students? Just wondering if there are better deals to be had in the fall on intro class textbooks like Econ, Calculus, etc., other than ordering from online used book sellers (still really expensive!).

And thank you for all the great advice. This thread has been fantastic to follow!

@OScarlett: I only EVER bought books from the book store if it was a last resort. This first semester may be an exception since all courses will be basically new, but here is my order of operations for buying books:

(1) Friends that took that class (obvious)
(2) Facebook marketplace: surprisingly awesome, especially for intro level courses that thousands of people have taken. Just set location to Columbus
(3) Amazon–especially Amazon Prime: Free 2-day shipping, just make sure you click on the used from OTHER sellers option, not necessarily from Amazon themselves
(4) eBay
(5) Any campus bookstore besides the campus Barnes and Noble
(6) Bartering with the devil
(7) Barnes and Noble

I always made it a rule to NEVER buy the book until after the first day of class–at least one class per quarter for me did not require a book (may be something you have to “feel out”) even though it said it did. Over 4 years, that saved hundreds of dollars.

Also, when buying from others / online, make sure to be weary of International editions. NO CAMPUS BOOKSTORE will buy them back. So if it saves you $5 but you cannot sell it back later, it may not be worth it. Also look into book loaning or eBook formats.

Hi, I am going to be living in Drackett Tower with 3 other girls. I was wondering if anyone has ever been in there and if there is enough room to fit a TV. I only want like a 15 inch TV but according to the diagram, I don’t see how it will fit but I feel like someone has had to been able to fit it before…I dont want to annoy my roommates by taking up all the space. I know I can just put it on a desk but then we will need some sort of comfy chair and it will also take away a study area…

Here is the diagram
http://urds.osu.edu/posts/floorplans/drackett_b7_t128.pdf</a>
is this at least somewhat accurate? does it come with 4 desks? (why is one of them bigger and randomly have computers on it and is it built in as well?) Thank you

I lived in Drackett for two years (as a super double) and I can definitely see it being cramped with 4 people. Possible locations for a TV would be (1) on top of the micro-fridge or (2) On top of your desk shelf. Every built in desk in drackett has two layers of shelving, and a small tv could fit on the top one.

The built in desks are definitely nicer…get one if you can. The diagram is like that because the rooms were originally for two, then they just added more desks (free standing, not anchored) to make it a quad. The diagram is exactly what the room will look like.

Here is a partial picture of the right side of on the of built in desks for reference:

I’ve been reading this thread, and it has been really helpful to me! I could use some help, too. I’m going to be an out-of-state freshman residing in Taylor Tower, but it’s not academic year housing, so I won’t have a place to stay during Spring Break. I called the housing service office, and they said I could switch to an academic year dorm after fall semester if any rooms become available. What are the chances of an academic year dorm room becoming available if I apply at the beginning of the autumn semester? I’d prefer to stay in Bradley Hall during spring semester since it’s an honors and academic year dorm, but I don’t think my chances of getting a room there are high. If I can’t get into an academic year dorm for spring semester, what should I do? Are there apartments or other types of living quarters close to the campus that I could rent for one week? Also, does Ohio State have rooms for students to stay in just during Spring Break that they can pay for without having to stay in a academic dorm during the entire semester?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!

@Holly123

You should have a fairly decent chance of switching into an Academic Year dorm, as long as you aren’t picky. In the past, Siebert, Drackett, and Norton were all academic year buildings that I know of–you may not get the room size or # of roommates you want, but if you keep your options open, you should be able to switch–timing is also key; make the request ASAP. Don’t forget about Christmas break if that matters as well.

I don’t think that there are dorms where you can stay for the break and definitely not an apartment (barring strange circumstances), but a hotel would be your best option. This may be a pain depending on your situation (if you have a car), but I’ve seen a hotel off of Interstate 71 that advertises a weekly rate of $199–that may be an option to consider. I would check other hotels as well (again).

Note that you won’t have to move out all of your belongings during break.

Hello again-now we are getting down to the really important stuff:

I know where my S will be living. How exactly are we supposed to address mail to OSU students?

If they are living in a quad, are they supposed to supply their own toilet paper?

I appreciate your answers. :-)

1)

Student Name
Dorm Address
Room # xxxx
City, State Zip

Example, Drackett Tower

Brutus Buckeye
161 CURL DR
Drackett #426
COLUMBUS, OH 43210

2) No student living in dorms needs to supply their own toilet paper, it will be provided at the front desk. It’s even 2-ply! (didn’t used to be, those were dark times…)

@OSULolz

Thank you so much for your help!! I really appreciate it!! I actually don’t need to stay on campus during Winter Break–just Spring Break. Also, I won’t have a car, so getting to a hotel might be difficult, but I’ll definitely take it into consideration. Thanks again!

OSULolz- I’m having trouble contacting the financial aid office. They seem to always have me on hold even when I call at 9AM when they are open. I was wondering if you could answer my question to some extent at least until I am able to get a hold of them. I was wondering what the PLUS Loan is about and when does interest accumulate. As well as when does repayment start? To my understanding from the website, it says that repayment starts after that year. I was wondering if there was a loan or multiple loans that would cover all my costs for tuition/room & board where I would be able to start paying them off once I graduate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@OSUFisher:

It may often take 15-20 minutes to get on the line with the SFA office, you’ll just have to be patient.

OSULolz,

You have been helpful in a previous reply about all of the places to purchase books, so thank you. A more basic question may be, where/how does S find a list of the books he will need for his classes?? Is it somewhere on Buckeye Link in the Student Center? HELP!

Thanks, as always, for any direction you can provide! :)
