Do you know anything about the Work Study program? I received a work study option with my financial aid and noticed just recently noticed that I can now apply for a work study job on the student financial aid website. I was interested in being an office assistant at one the of residence halls but I read somewhere else that you apply for those by going right to the residence hall and asking for an application at the front desk. Do you know if it is possible to work as an office assistant for a work study? If I could apply during orientation or is there any other time I could apply?

Also, I wanted to know when the appropriate time to apply was…for the 2013-2014 academic year is it okay to start applying now for other work study jobs?

Speaking of jobs, how widely available are jobs on campus? During orientation they made it seem easy to snag a part time job somewhere on campus if you wanted one, how true is that?

I know freshmen are not allowed cars their first year, but does anybody know if they can have scooters/mopeds? If so, how is parking for them?

Anybody know how rigorous honors for Fisher business is?

Igmister, bring a bike. There is motorcycle parking in lots of places though.

Spudcommando, a lot of the dining halls and dorms will be hiring at the beginning of the year, and then throughout the year if there is need. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find a job at one of the dining halls serving food, or at the dorms as an office assistant. There are also jobs through places like the RPAC, in university catering, and in the different academic offices. I suggest you start by looking for an OA job in your dorm, and if that doesn’t work, apply at nearby dorms too. Those jobs tend to be pretty great for students because you’re just sitting at a desk most of the time, and are free to do homework or watch movies while you aren’t busy. There are also a fair number of restaurants and stores right off campus that hire students too.

Igmister, a very small minority of people on campus own motorcycles or mopeds, but I don’t see the need if you’re a freshman. I recommend a bike if you’re certain you want some form of transportation, but it shouldn’t take you more than 15 minutes to walk to your classes from nearly any dorm, and there are also free buses that just loop around campus.

Drenzolim, honors for Fisher is a little different than honors for most other majors, because in order to graduate with honors (not latin honors for having a high GPA), you will have to apply to and be selected for one of three honors programs–Honors Accounting, Honors Contract, and Honors Cohort. Honors Accounting is really just for accounting majors, Honors Contract requires students to complete a minor or major outside the business college and do special project work, and Honors Cohort students take several of their core business classes together as a group and do special project work. Students in the honors programs are also required to keep their GPA fairly high by graduation, and complete honors/ higher level courses.

I believe the requirements, if they have not changed, are at least a 3.5 GPA, and around half to 2/3 of applicants (mostly University honors students) are accepted to each program. There are around 25 students in each Contract and Cohort, and I think more in Accounting, although some drop out if they change majors.

So basically what’s the better deal for an incoming freshman(I don’t mind paying a little extra) the block o tickets or regular seating?

Are students assigned an adviser or do they need to call and get their own? My son is going into pre-health professions and I saw something about finding an adviser but was unsure exactly what that meant. Should he already have an adviser before orientation or will he be assigned one? Thanks!

Students are automatically assigned advisors by major. There are often multiple advisors for more popular majors, and in that case each student is assigned one particular advisor, but can talk to any of the others for a quick question or walk-in advising.

He’ll probably find out who his advisor is at orientation. They should be there helping students figure out what to schedule for their first set of classes.

could you please answer my question? Thank you

Unless you already have friends there, I would go with Block-O since the seating isn’t assigned…that way, when you make friends with people in your hall, anyone who has the same Block-O can sit together

Buying Block-O tickets also makes it easier to sell a ticket or two for games you aren’t interested in. Someone can buy a Block O ticket and meet up with their friends and sit together, whereas someone buying a single ticket for an assigned seat isn’t going to know their neighbors.

My son hopes to get Block-O tickets and wants to be in the end where the football team and students sing Carmen Ohio after the game. Do you know if that is north or south? Thanks!

@seniormom2013–

That would be Block O South. It’s also nice because there is no flag pole in the way. The main downside is that the main scoreboard is behind you

So buying tickets to the games gets you in all the home games? Or all the home and away?

You can only buy home games through OSU

Do families visit OSU on Homecoming Weekend, or are the activities for the students and alumni? I’m making a motel reservation for Family Weekend earlier in October, but can’t find info online about Homecoming.

@mgemler

Parent and Family Weekend is not on Homecoming weekend.

Homecoming: [Homecoming at Ohio State University](http://homecoming.osu.edu/)

I wasn’t clear in my message---- I realize the 2 weekends are different, and I already made motel reservations for the Family Weekend. I don’t know if I should plan to go down for Homecoming, too, or if the events for THAT weekend are geared more towards current students and alumni. Do many families/parents visit OSU for Homecoming if they’re not alumni?
