Ask Away!

hazeleyez, thanks for the info on krichten… wow doughnuts/muffins would be fantastic on exam days! especially since my class is at 8 in the morning!

lol oh yes it was sooooooo nice! oh and be sure to get there BEFORE 8 am everyday…she is like a hawk and marks on the sheet who is not there literally as soon as the clock hits 8 LOL

Were any of you guys in cromwell last year? I’m in it now and wanna know how it was. Also, I’m on the 5th floor, will that get really hot?

I was on Cromwell 3!!! It was awesome. I know a lot of people think it’s awful but it really isn’t. Every dis I ever heard about Cromwell came from someone who was living in Travers/Wolfe and knew nothing about living in Cromwell. Yes, the rooms are smaller than those in the towers but honestly my roommate and I never even noticed (and we both brought a TON of stuff lol). The floors also seem smaller than those in the towers. Because of this I knew everyone on my floor and we bonded really well. We often had movie nights and even did a Secret Snowflake. One of my best freinds from high school was in Wolfe and she said there were a lot of cliques on her floor. Having to share a bathroom with only 5 other people compared to 24 is sooooooo nice  I never went to the 5th floor so I can’t tell you how hot it will get but it will most definitely get considerably hot from August-early Oct and late April-the end of the semester. Cromwell has REAL windows (not the really tiny ones that the towers have) so that’s a bit of a plus. You can open them a whole lot more.

In general, Cromwell tends to be quieter than Travers/Wolfe. I know a lot of people are worried that they’re going to feel separated from the rest of the class but come on, you’re a 2 second walk away from Travers/Wolfe and no one forces you to stay in your room. If you want a loud party atmosphere you can head over to the towers at any time. Or, you can stay in (usually) quieter Cromwell and still have fun bonding with your suitemates :)

Is getting the international edition of a book a bad idea? They say the content is the same as in the regular edition, but I want to be sure before I buy my chemistry book.

When will professors start uploading the course syllabus, and will it be on SOCS?

I knew people who had international copies of books and as far as I know they never had any issue with it.

Some profs will post the syllabus before class starts but others won’t post them until after (my orgo prof has already posted ours along with 39 other resources. yippee lol). Yes, they will be on SOCS under “Resources.” Whether or not they post the syllabus online, they are required to give you a hard copy. You will most likely see the majority of them at the first class.

What else would show up under Resources aside from the syllabus? And is the summer reading essay graded? I heard it was just to give the teacher a writing sample.

Resources would be like old exams, links to study resources, powerpoints from lectures (if you’re prof posts their lectures), articles that you have to read, etc.

You get together with your fsp during welcome week, discuss the book, hand in the essay and never see or hear of it again. It was not graded.

Do you have an interdisciplinary concentration or know anyone that does? is it common? i’m interested in doing the cognitive science one because it deals with a lot of subjects i’m interested in

do they have a hair salon/barbershop on campus lol? where do people get haircuts if they don’t have cars as freshmen?

I think i know of one guy who might be doing the cognitive science concentration. Honestly I don’t think there’s a lot of freshmen who will declare a concentration because the classes you will take your first 2 years are pretty much already decided for you. Maybe later when you get a better idea of what you want to do - maybe that’s when people decide.

No, there are no hair salons on campus lol. I’m sure there’s one nearby and you can always take the loop bus to Quakerbridge Mall. My suitemate actually went home a few weekends just to get her haircut (personally I think it’s a waste of time and money). Everyone else I knew would go during breaks. Or you can do what I do and only get your hair cut once a year lol :)

Can we arrange for a meeting with our adviser when school starts, or is there some mandatory meeting we have to have anyway?

You will be required to meet with your advisor before you register for your classes for next semester. Your advisor will email you about signing up for a time about 2-3 weeks before the registration period. You will see on Paws that there is a “hold” on your account, meaning that you cannot register until this hold is removed. Once you meet with your advisor they will remove it.

If you want to meet with your advisor before registration (it’s in November) I’m sure you can email them and set up a time.

How do we sign up for a tutor ?I heard spots fill up quickly. Is it through CAS or is there a separate center. I am a nursing major and I know I want to get a tutor for my Anatomy and Biochem class.

I found this on getting a tutor: [Apply For A Tutor :: Tutoring :: The College of New Jersey](The College of New Jersey | Tutoring Center)

Is it unusual that none of my professors have posted a syllabus on SOCS yet? Apparently my new chemistry teacher is Dr. Ed Louis according to the chair. Have you ever heard of him?

Actually it’s usual to have no syllabus up yet lol. Some profs will post them before class starts but others won’t post them until later. So far I’ve only heard from 2 of my 5 professors.

Sorry, I haven’t heard of Dr. Louis.

hazeleyez: you lived in cromwell. could you tell me about what I need to bring for the bathroom? you said shower curtain and tenion rods, but do I need towel hooks, shower caddys, wastebasket, etc or anything else I might be forgetting.

Does anyone know if Tracy Kress is decent for BIO 185? I had Dr. Hussain in the spring for the class and it was extremely difficult and was wondering if Dr. Kress is at least a little better. Thanks.

I had Kress for Themes 185 last fall and was very pleased. She is extremely nice and always willing to help. IMO her exams were fairly easy. She also gave us oppurtunities to earn back some points on labs. While I cannot guarantee her level of ease this year (as last year was only her first year) she is definitely way better than Hussain.
