Ask Away!

THe suitcase thing is really old…almost everyone who goes to TCNJ lives on-campus (i think its like 95%) and most students stay on the weekends. There are many activities on campus like: comedians, clubs, intramurals, plays, The Rat, etc., you could be busy everynight.

My son is a freshman at TCNJ. He loves it there. He lives on campus and we live close about 25 miles away. He never comes home and says most people are there over the weekend. There is a lot to do plus kids study, do projects, hang out etc. He was not involved with activities in high school but since he became a student he has actuall had to cut back on activities as there was almost too much to do! My wife and I are thrilled. Nice kids, happy campus, pretty place, good faculty, and the food there is decent. We are all happy with his choice and he had many choices ( eg Lafayette, Lehigh, Dickinson)

Most students at TCNJ don’t go home over weekends, and while it’s not a big “party” school there is plenty to do. Most everyone is from the top 10% of their high school class. The profs are close to the students and there aren’t any big lecture classes. The campus is stunning - and the cafeteria was just redone over the summer!

TCNJ is an A+ school for top students. It may not offer as many curriculum choices as Rutgers - but it’s a far more selective and better choice for students who want the feel of a top-notch, small liberal arts college.

Does TCNJ notify ED applicants only on the 15th or December or is it more of a rolling process? They just got all my application materials today.

hey feareman,
on the TCNJ website, it said that they would let us ED students know no later than December 15:)

Well I hope to hear soon, but then again hearing around December 15 would also be great as a Christmas present. :P

Definitely! Let me know if you hear anything from them. I still haven’t!

Hi, I’m a senior in High School right now and I appreciate what you’re doing to help us all out,. Thanks. Right now, I’m loving TCNJ. It has the serene, small, and quiet environment I’ve been looking for and I visited it as well. I just have some small questions.

Does TCNJ NOT have air conditioning in all of their dorms or is it just the freshmen dorms?

I already saw the dorms, but I kinda forgot how they look like… Are they decent sized dorms and feel adequate?

Also, are the facilities in labs, classes, and others stuff nice as well? It’s not like just a desk and a chalkboard right? And are the facilities high quality?

I can answer two of the questions for you… even though I’m applying as well.

2) I’ve seen the dorm rooms a couple of times… they are bigger than those of the other schools I had visited but my parents said they are probably a little above average. Either way, they seemed big enough (larger than JHU, Gettysburg, and Villanova)
3) I’ve seen their bio facilities. Extremely nice. plenty of labs etc… its kinda the school’s flagship building. Electron microscopes and all that (i got to play around with them at that scholar reception thing), plus much more.

Go visit! That was what won me over!

Hi! I’m currently a sophomore bio major!

1) The only dorms on campus with AC are: New Residence Hall (Sophomore), Eickhoff (Upper Classmen and sometimes sophomores…I live there now and it’s awesome), all of the Townhouses (Upperclassmen/Sometimes sophomores), Apartments (Upperclassmen). So yes, all of the freshman dorms are NOT air conditioned, but there are a few sophomore dorms that also do not have AC.

2) The dorms are decent. As a freshman you can’t really expect much anywhere you go lol. Travers/Wolfe have sinks which are a plus. The rooms in Cromwell are a lot smaller but you share a bathroom with your sutiemates.

3) Ditto on the bio building being awesome  The science complex is one of the newer academic buildings on campus so it’s really nice. The classrooms are pretty standard with desks and chalkboards but they all have projector screens for lectures. The labs are very nice.

Am I allowed to set up my own Air Conditioner in the dorms? And are there a fair amount of Indians at TCNJ? I am definately going to join that Asian club for Indians at TCNJ. And how do you like the bio facilities and teachers?

ACs are illegal. Just bring some fans because the first few weeks are always really hot. Statistically there aren’t that many Indians, but most of them hang out together so if you hang out with a few, it’ll prob seem like there are a lot. I think the bio teachers are generally good.

Are there any “weedout” courses for Bio majors?

Not really any bio courses. Maybe gen chem depending on the prof u get.

Do you have any information on the honors program? I’m interested and I meet the requirements as far as I can tell, but was just wondering if you’d recommend it or have any insight on how it is. Thanks!

Same question as above, plus:

How hard is it to maintain a science GPA > 3.5? I hear stories of people studying for days and still getting Cs/Bs. I obviously don’t expect or necessarily desire a 4.0 in college, but is it really that hard to get an A for a “difficult” teacher if you put the effort in? For the record, I enjoy difficult classes. :P

Also, how does class registration work freshman year? Do you get to chose your profs? I heard there are some to absolutely avoid (Hussain?)

Here’s some info on the honors program:
[Honors :: The College of New Jersey](Honors)

I’m not in it, but personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal since all you have to do to complete it is do 5 honors classes, which are just writing intensive versions of the non-honors classes. You don’t get any other benefits like better housing or anything. If you think you’ll like it, you can do it abd then easily drop out later if you don’t.

A 3.5 (the average of an A- and B+) isn’t that hard to maintain as long as you put in the time to prepare for exams. Of course it depends on the professor and the student. And I would go for good teachers who know how to explain the material clearly over difficult teachers. Some are both.

You don’t get to choose the profs, a least for bio and chem; they put you in random ones. But if there’s a conflict with one of the other classes you want to take, they may be able to switch you. And yeah hussain is the only one i’d avoid for themes.

I’m in the honors program. The perk of being in the honors program is being able to say you’re in honors. Being able to fit the 5 required classes (you get to choose them) in can be slightly difficult for people depending on their major, but it’s no big deal if you cannot complete the program (it’s a little easier for science people to complete if you take honors gen chem I and II).

Yes, your GPA will depend on the effort you put in and on your professor. Some professors just refuse to give out A’s and some classes are just ridiculously hard. I just took orgo with the hardest, but best, professor and it was killer. I worked my butt off and am somewhat satisfied with my grade given how difficult the class was. A 3.5 shouldn’t be too difficult to manage though.

Hussain is definitely a nightmare. If you get her, try to switch. If that’s not possible, then good luck lol. I’d suggest getting on her good side right from the start (I’ve heard she tends to have favorites). I’ve also heard Nagourney isn’t the best for gen chem.

Thanks for all the answers!

If you’re not a morning person, do they try to schedule you around what you want or is it entirely random? #1 reason I’m sick of HS is the schedule… 6AM doesn’t sound that early, but to me its killer! I can’t think/stay awake for the rest of the day =[

It probably depends on what classes you want and your time slot, but it’s definitely possible not to have any early classes (earliest is 8 in the morning iirc). Freshman year my earliest class was 10.
