hey just wanted to make this so people could ask me questions about SBU. i'm currently a freshman and you can ask me things about this school and i'll answer it based on the experience i have had so far. i swear, i will not sugar coat anything to advertise the school. i'll be 100% in my answers. you can ask about:
admission scores i've heard of from other students
the food
how the professors are
how tough the courses are
cleanliness of the school
the dorms
the parties
the social life
chances of your admission (based on what i've seen)
ANYTHING.
btw i'm majoring in mechanical engineering so if any incoming engineers have questions, don't be shy to ask.

Hello , I’m a high school senior interested in stony brook. I want to know how’s the dorms, parties and social life like in stony brook. Like what goes on during the weekends ?!

Thanks

The dorms are fair. my room is about a 14x14 for 2 people. i was tripled at the beginning of the year but was later de-tripled a month later. People are very friendly and it’s really easy to make friends as long as you leave your door open. The bathrooms (for corridor style) in my opinion aren’t the best. you share it with about 30 people on your floor. The maintenance workers go home on the week ends so it gets even messier. i suggest living in a suite, you can take care of your own bathroom and it is more spacey.

As for the parties, they’re pretty fun once you get in but that is IF you get in. waiting for rides could take anywhere from 30mins- to an hour. If you’re a guy like me, it’s even tougher to get into a party. All the frats care about is the ladies. It’s even cheaper for the ladies, sometimes free. for guys it ranges from 5-$10. but the parties are a really good way to de-stress and have fun. Some of the ones i’ve been to have had 200-300 people. Sounds packed, but it was really cool to experience my first college party. It was just as if i was in Blue mountain state haha.

The social life at stony brook goes like this: whatever you put in, is what you get out.
sounds corny but if you don’t make the effort to join stuff or get out of your dorm to meet people, this is definitely NOT the campus for you. i know some people that hate it around here because they didnt make the effort to make friends the first week. cause after your first few weeks, everyone settles in to their own groups and it’s harder to fit in. dont mean to be rude but, losers won’t have fun here. If you’re really outgoing then you’ll love it here.
also, one more thing. many people go home on weekends so it’s very quiet sometimes. but if you find the right clubs and activities, you’ll have more than enough to do. on top of that, this is not high school. you will most likely have tons of work to catch up on. so think of the weekend as a blessing to not get distracted so easily.

What were your stats in getting into Stony? was your ECs decent enough? How’s the freshmen dorming?

and i want to do Chemical engineering. Explain everything that you know so far lol

My son is a hs senior looking seriously at SB. He’s interested in computer science, and I’m wondering about his chances considering the reputation of SB.
He’s got a 3.7 unweighted GPA with all AP or college level classes.
His SATs are kind of stinky–600 CR / 650 math–not sure about writing.
Good ECs–4 yrs varsity baseball–capt this year / president of junior class, honor society, yada, yada, yada.
Think he sounds like a SB fit?
Also little worried about SB’s rep for being a suitcase school. Do SOME people hang around on weekends, or does the school totally clear out on Fri?

@lilmelonred My ACT were as follows:
Math:28
Reading: 27
Science: 30
Writing essay: 10
In terms of SAT, that is equivalent to about 1900s.
my ECs were moderately heavy. 1 school team, 4 clubs, over 300+ volunteer hours.

Information about freshman dorming was said in my last statement. Overall, the dorming is alright. nothing fancy at all really.

And engineering is VERY difficult. no matter which type it is. im not really too familiar with chem engineering. but for mechanical, I’m literally in the library 4+ hours a day. i imagine it would be even more difficult for chem. I’m still having a very difficult time adjusting to college. The average acceptance score for all engineers THIS year was about 1260 or so MATH AND READING ONLY. and about a 92 average i think.

@Jcc1964
Your son actually sounds like a great candidate for the school. just as long as his average is somewhat above or near 90 with an SAT of over 1250, I’m pretty sure he’ll be fine. I don’t want to scare you or anything but i had a friend last year who applied to engineering with a 1230 Math and Reading and a 93 average, and he still somehow got rejected. I have no idea how that was possible.
as for the campus question, the weekend in which everyone goes home varies. But most of the time it clears out during late friday afternoons. Recently people have been hanging around for the weekends. there are many things to do. BUT i suggest that he should stay on weekends to study and get ahead of work. that was my number 1 mistake so far. I have not been taking advantage of weekends.

@Jcc1964: I’m a recent graduate of Stony Brook (May 2012). I studied Computer Science as an undergraduate. I thought I should give some insight. Overall, its a great program and I greatly recommended. I met a lot of intelligent and successful professors in their field. Professors that had experience in the real world but later on went into the academic field. The program is one of the best in the nation and its growing at a fast pace. Mostly ranked between 20-40 in the country. As soon as I graduated, they announced a new Computer Science building currently under construction. The program has a bright future and I’m sure your soon wont regret it. The tuition of the school remains cheap even though is on the rise (5% per year) but Stony Brook tuition is a joke compared to most schools with similar highly-ranked programs.

Family weekend is coming up on OCtober 20th. Maybe you can give it a visit and see how the campus is…

Good luck

Do you know what the avg. SAT & GPA scores are for the Scholars for Medicine program?

Oh okay. My Stats are horrible especially my CR score on my SATs… but i’m applying to EOP so yeah. I hope they are willing to take me.

Okay so my stats go as follows.
92 average out of 95…
SAT. 430 on CR, 670 on math and 560 on writing. I’m applying to EOP.
My ECs are decent.
My teacher Recs are most likely pretty good.
So how likely will i be admitted? This is one of my top schools so…

so what is EOP?
could you tell me the avg gpa, sat , act also the difficulty of getting in? Stony is my top choice right now i mainly want to know about admissions
also my gpa is 87ish and i do have honors and ap and good ECs sat is 550 each and 25 act
thank you (:

How common are classes with less than 50 people?

What fraction of ppl will you say are from Long Island?

How common is it to see different ethnicities intermingling with other groups?

How hard is it to make close friends for an outgoing type person?

Can you discuss anything you know or have heard about the economics major?

Hi, I’m a senior and I was thinking of applying to Stony Brook just as another safety school; do you think it’s a feasible option for me? I’m in-state and I already applied to Binghamton EA and I’m planning on applying to Geneseo.

I have a 2190 SAT, 3.9 UW GPA, good ECs. Planning to major in chemistry. Would SBU be considered a safety for someone like me?

@lilmelonred i think you should probably try working on your english score. that sounds a little too low for acceptance.

those scores will definitely put you in good standings for stony brook(in other words, you’re in). so of course, stony brook will be a great safety school for you. Binghamton will probably be a safety as well.
