Questions for current SBU students/alumni

I am deciding between SBU and another school and I would really like to hear about your experiences at SBU. Some specific questions:

[QUOTE=""]

What is the general atmosphere of the school?
Are the students there friendly and welcoming?
How difficult would you say the classes were?
What is the dorming experience there like?
Is grade inflation or deflation more prevalent?
What is the social life like?

Any answers would be greatly welcomed! Thank you in advance.

Students are not so friendly. It’s really a depressed school overall BUT if you try you can have an amazing time there. I know people who love Stony Brook and I know people who would love to see the school burn. I personally found the students to be very unfriendly but i found a group of friends who were very nice. If you are taking a science class your classes will be HARD. I think some classes are harder than they should be but the social life here sucks so you will have a lot of time for studying. I think grade deflation is more prevalent. And lastly the dorms. TRY TO SIGN UP FOR DORMS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE!!! Or else you will end up like me and get the worst dorms imaginable. Dorms are really hit and miss. You may get a nice one or you may get a smelly old dorm that makes you wanna throw up every time you walk in. The food is really awful. The food is really old or the portions are incredibly small. And you WILL be ripped off. You can surely enjoy your time at this school but you have to work at it. I transferred but you may like it. What is the other school?

The other school is Binghamton, and I’ve actually already put my deposit down for the school :slight_smile: Thank you very much for your input!

Do you think the aesthetics of the 4 SUNY Centers with the weather contributes to a depressing impact? Of the 4, Stony Brook is the least depressing in terms of weather. Long Island isn’t under clouds for 9 months a year.

If you’re unhappy with food, dorms, and social life it can have a very negative effect on your grades trust me

They are changing food services this year, so it will be different in the Fall, different better or worse? remains to be seen. My D is fine with the food at SB. Its not the best, but not so bad either. Prices are high, because of the NY area. My D joined the marching band, and has many friends with the band. Dorms are not great, they are putting in a new dorm, but upper classmen will get that one. Good luck!

Well, I have excellent friends in my major. But the school is still terrible. They had brilliant ideas, but they fail to complete all of them. This school can’t keep up to its growth.

Solar system is trash. The SUNY Korea courses are mixed with our courses. Some courses are offered to students coming from Korea. I managed to get into it, then the stupid staff kicks me out of the class not before all classes are closed for registration. Trust me, they look exactly the same except the course ID is off by a little. How can a well known CS school failed to set limit to each account? Yet, I still don’t know why my transfer courses satisfy nothing to the system that I have to fix that every semester in the department to take higher courses. Lastly, the Solar spammed my email about major declaration when I declared it

The food gets old quickly, I am eating off campus food now.
