is it true freshmen are not allowed to have suites? cuz i put suites for 5/6 choices on the housing app...

nope. many freshmen get suites.

i have ~43 ap units going into eecs @ berkeley.
if i want to be a pre-med, is it possible to lighten my eecs-required courseload by somehow using those ap units?

karch, review the undergraduate eecs notes at:
http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Programs/Notes/

It shows all requirements for the major and AP credit fulfillment. Be careful of using up AP credit and then lacking in a requirement. (i.e., If you skip Math 1a and 1b by using BC credit, you will not be able to satisfy the satisfy the 30 Natural Science & Math requirement without an additional course).

That said, most of us come in with 30-40 transfered AP units. Majority of EECS finish their requirements in 3 years and some graduate, others stick round in take additional courses or find other programs (such as premed).

As a rule, you are required to take 2 technicals (engineering/math/physics/etc..) and complete 12 units each semester to stay enrolled in the program. That said, once you finish the basic requirements, the rest is up to you.

when u get admitted to berkeley, do they have a program where u can experience the university for a day or 2 (live in the dorm, participate in campus life, etc)

CalSO - weekend registration/orientation program.
calso.berkeley.edu

Else, call up your friends! - We have some amazing party weekends that you could conveniently schedule your visit ;)

Quick question that a few of us on here were wondering. Is it worth it to choose the basic meal plan or the "premium" meal plan with 3 meals a day? Just wondering what Berkeley students typically choose and why.

Most are basic.

By the end of the semester, most students are so sick of DC food, they eat out anyhow. Its always funny to see empty shelves in the last days of the semester as students try to use points at the cafes and stores.

I'd recommend with the smaller and allocating some funds to eat out. Berkeley food is cheap and will go some variety.

Thanks for the advice SF. My parents seem to insist that I get the premium plan, but I think that I'll get sick of Crossroads after a while ...

^ wow your parents are willing to pay extra money? niiiice. lol.

any co op people here?!?! do you recommend it for freshmen? =/

Has anyone actually heard of students getting their admission revoked after paying the deposits because they end up missing a credit they intended to take? I dropped an elective foreign language and I made the mistake of putting a class as two semesters when it was one (honest mistake... is if they've believe me... whatever, my fault...) and now I'm actually worried.

A: Typically, your admission to Berkeley will be cancelled.

Or so says UCB.... I've written them through email and snail mail twice... emailed them the day I was accepted and never heard back. Is that a good sign? I suppose I should just call on Monday, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was intimidated...

Has anyone ever been rescinded for something like this? Keep in mind that these are elective courses - over 10 classes this semester - and that I am maintaining As.... including 5 AP courses... that seems like I am keeping up my end of the deal, for the most part...

I've heard one alum (attended in the 70s) say that living in the co-ops from year one to graduation was the best thing that happened to him due to his constantly being around cool people that knew how things worked already, eating with them nightly. I know another first year that I just met that lived in a non USCA co-op his first year, and was very glad he did so. I think it depends on the person and the co-op and the alternative living situations available. I think it works great for some, but probably not with others- I haven't heard any horror stories, but I imagine they exist.

Berkeley food is AMAZING - PLEASE eat out at GOOD PLACES aka Cheeseboard, Cafe de la Paz, Liason, Barney's, etc

cathrsx3, I would recommend against going into the co-ops. Going into the dorms as a freshmen will allow you to meet the most people in the easiest setting. From random get-togethers to studying/procrastinating together, theres an element (and friends...) from the dorm experience which will stay wtih you for the remainder of your time at Cal and your life.

Co-ops are great - mostly because its a cheap style of living that is fun and different. If you're interested, there is no reason that you should not consider it for your 2-4th years.

Why rush? You'll have enough difficulty adjusting to the college and dorm experience as it is. Enjoy it and I strongly advise you to make the most of it!

when do we find out who our roommates are and which building we are going to live in?

I got a triple in Unit 1 through the lottery and I'm dreading. I had 5 choices and none of which I got. Is there anything I can to do get a double? Help. The triple is the reason I didn't go to some of the other schools.

Hey is anyone here majoring in Chem? If yes, could I get some help on the requirement that's due on May 25th? (yes I procrastinated)

Like, I don't know what courses to choose if I APed out of them already.

Should we choose classes before CalSO or during CalSO, where a rep might (from what i heard) tell us what classes we do not have to take...?

have an idea of what classes you want to take, it's much easier than going in completely blind. The rep will help you fine tune it, and you'll save a lot of time.

Hey everyone. We got something in the mail about the yearbook and "new student record." Of course, my parents want to submit a photo for the new student record, but I'm more hesitant. Can someone tell me what exactly the new student record book is and whether it's really worth it to submit a photo? Thanks

it's a way to milk $80. you can get it, it's no harm, but i didn't, didn't think i needed it. facebook is just as well for pictures and what not.
