@Center I would recommend getting him a phone, since he will need to be checking his exeter email daily, and have easy access to canvas (this website where teachers post assignments, future test dates, etc- but not every teacher uses it)
Also, if he had a smartphone he’d be able to Skype/facetime you more often if he’s on the go.
@AMS0203 you have been a huge help --thanks so much
@divdad ah. my sincere apologies for the comment! To reply to your actual questions/comments:
1)do the faculty advisers of certain extracurricular activities have extra pull in the admissions process. The non-academic aspect of an applicant’s profile is absolutely considered by the readers and the committee. 100%! In fact we have quite a bit of experience with this andI have been told the approximate formula
2)My point was not that the existence of legacies (and other groups like athletes, URM, etc) is a mystery but that the weight non-academics characteristic are given in the admissions decision year to year is not transparent. TRUE but I think it is no less opaque than Harvard, Yale et al. There certainly is no official weight but it can be divined with some basic math.
Sooooooo… how much of a time commitment is squash?
Additionally, is it hard to adjust to Exeter as a new lower?
@Center no problem.
@db8r62845 I came in as a new lower! There are people who say it’s the best way to come in lol. It’s not easy, but there’s a ton of people to help you if you need it.
As for squash, it depends if you’re jv or varsity. As with any other sport, squash will take up your time the more advanced you are, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to manage your time, factoring in a sport.
When is the earliest you can ship a package to arrive in your PEA mailbox? Can you send it so it arrives on sept 7?
Also, about the Stanford research course, how does that work? Is it over the summer or during school? Isn’t Stanford in California? Also, does that particular course have a separate fee?
@Anonymousia so, you can actually ship it now, and the mail office will just hold it for you if it’s too big to fit in your mailbox.
As for the stanford research course, it’s a course you apply for the end of your lower (or upper spring), to be taken your upper or senior spring. The course itself is during school, however, as an upper taking that course you’ll have the opportunity to apply for an internship at Stanford over the summer. I do need to warn you, though- it is a VERY rigorous course, so much that it is double block, so you’ll have to give up one of your electives. To my knowledge, that course doesn’t have a separate fee.
wait, so is it possible to give up an elective (religion/history/music) in order to try out intro to genetics and courses like that in my incoming lower year? the reason why im asking this is because i saw how applicants who took intro to genetics or some other specified courses would preferred over other applicants. i am already registered for my courses, but would it be possible to do this? I am due to take intro to chemistry as a new lower, and I took honors biology as a freshman. that said, is it possible to request taking intro to genetics this year?
oh, and how is abbot hall? is it nice there? and how do i know if I have a single or a double? i saw from my proctor that abbot only has 30 people this year
@db8r62845 if your room assignment page does not list a roommate that means you are in a single. As for your other questions I defer to experts…
ok thanks @AMS0203 ! As a followup question, is there a fee for sending packages to your Exeter mailbox? Also, how do you apply for the internship? In your opinion, is it very selective and hard to get chosen?
@Anonymousia I don’t think there are fees for sending packages to your mailbox, especially during the school year.
As for the internship, I don’t know. You have to be in the course Bio 670 to apply. If I’m not mistaken, though, you’re an incoming prep (?), so my advice is to not really worry about that until your lower spring when you’re applying for the course. It’s hard enough getting into the course, so I’m sure it’ll also be difficult getting the internship, but you won’t know until you try
@db8r62845 Abott is a great dorm. Nice central location, good dorm faculty and a close knit group of guys.
@db8r62845 intro to genetics and molecular genetics are only open to uppers and seniors.
@db8r62845 and abbott is a great dorm, probably one of the tightest dorms I know.
So where do I find my dorm information? I could not seem to find it on LionLinks. Also, how do people take BIO670 in their lower year?
Are pillows provided in each room? If so, how many?
Approximately how long is the walk from the northernmost all the way to the southernmost parts of campus?
On orientation day for new students (9/7), how students and parents provided free breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner?
Also, what are the transportation options to and from NYC during breaks? I heard Exeter provides busses??
@Anonymousia Yes, Exeter provides buses between Exeter and NYC. It was not clear to me whether or not there is an extra fee above tuition for the buses though. If there is the fee is something like $50.
