Wait, so if BIO670 requires Intro to Genetics, then do some lowers ever take Intro to Genetics? I know that most people taking the course are uppers and seniors, but there is a small paragraph at the end of the course description for BIO670 that implies that some uppers have taken BIO670. This must mean that said uppers MOST LIKELY took Intro to Genetics in their lower year.
As for how this information relates to me… As an incoming lower, I have taken Honors BIology at my previous school. I am assigned to taking Intro to Chemistry at Exeter this year. Clearly, I have already signed up for my courses. So is it still possible for me to switch out an elective for Into to Genetics?
Also, if the suggested plan above does not work out, then are there any other ways I can get involved in science at Exeter? (clubs, research opportunities, etc)
@db8r62845 communicate with your advisor.
@db8r62845 The genetics sequence lasts only fall and winter term. That means that you can take BIO 670 spring term. If you look at the genetics course description, notice that it only says open to uppers and seniors. You cannot take genetics your lower year, much less BIO 670. If you’ve already done biology at your old school, you need one year of either physics or chemistry, plus two terms of another science, and I suggest getting the yearlong requirement of physics or chemistry out of the way.
As for clubs, wait for club night which is in the beginning of the year. There’s a load of science clubs there.
@Anonymousia one pillow is provided. A lot of people buy their own pillows anyway since they like more than one. The walk from the northernmost part to the southernmost part depends, because campus extends to the nearby forest we own. If we’re talking about getting to the gym, then from the northernmost part of campus to the gym is about 10 minutes. Students and parents are provided free food, all you have to do is go to dhall (dining hall) and get food, just like you’d do if you were a regular student.
@Anonymousia The school offers buses to and from Grand Central Station, and Penn Station. One way is $50.
And for dining hall, just make sure you check the orientation schedule. Only one of the dining halls is open, I believe.
@AMS0203 Thanks for the info! I’ll be sure to look into it more!
Does anyone know what it’s like to have a single at Exeter?
@db8r62845 it’s just having your own room. It depends on the dorm, though- I had a huge room and a massive closet but that’s because I was assigned one of the biggest rooms on my floor. Overall it’s neat, though.
Nice
@db8r62845 having a single is what you make it. It allows you the flexibility to be as social as you want - by hanging out in the common room or having friends study in your room without having to worry if your roommate is inconvenienced. It also allows you the ability to set your own study and sleep schedule.
Why did you choose exeter?
What’s the earliest date you can move into your dorms @AMS0203
Well it depends on if you’re an international student. If you are, then you arrive at the school a few days before all the domestic students and get to know each other. You will move into temporary dorms (you’ll get to move into your actual dorms that you get assigned to a when everyone else comes). If you’re not an international student, then you’ll be moving in at the first day of school. @Silverca07
Traditionally move in day is the week after Labor Day. International students and varsity athletes move in on Tuesday. New students move in Wednesday, returning Students move in Thursday and school begins with opening assembly Friday.
I’m a current applicant for Exeter, and I want to ask: does everyone at Exeter seem like a child prodigy? Do you have to be outstanding in absolutely every area to be accepted?
Thanks!
@jkookie no not at all but your do need a high level of ability/aptitude across the board (which isnt really that different from other top schools) and a lot of self motivation and drive. There is a lot of work and it is a highly competitive student body.
I know that I am about 2 years too late but I was wondering when we find out what dorm we are in, if we have a room, and who the roommate is? Are we told this prior to the school year or is it more you show up on your first day and find out all of this?
@aegraham20 For new incoming students the dorm assignments usually happen the third week of August give or take about seven days. When you get your room assignment it will be clear whether you have a roommate or not and if so who the roommate is. You’ll be provided with contact information if you do have a roommate.
I know each dorm has a certain stereotype, and I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the stereotype is for Wheelwright (a girl’s dorm on the Northside)? I’m really interested in the dorm but I want to know what the girls are supposedly like.
Wheelwright is a great dorm. Friendly girls, lots of dorm life and good dorm faculty. Our daughter s actually transferring into wheelwright next year after spending 2 years in another dorm. She has spent lots of time in all the different dorms with friends over the last few years, and felt wheelwright had everything she was looking for.
