How hard is it to get a A or A- for a class?

Here’s the grade distribution for the last Spring term.

The PEA grades are:
11 = A
10 = A-
9 = B+
etc

There is no A+

Honors Distribution Spring Term 2017:

The percentage of returning students whose grade point averages placed them in the various categories of honors is as follows:
Seniors Uppers Lowers Juniors
Highest Honors (between 10.0 or higher) 42% 37% 37% 41%
High Honors (between 9.0 & 9.99) 35% 35% 35% 31%
Honors (between 8.0 & 8.99) 18% 14% 19% 16%

@Silverca07 It really depends on the person and the class. There are a few classes where most people get an A or A-, and there a few where no one in the class who get an A or A-. Some people seem to get A’s easily while other struggle to get any at all. For me personally, there were a few classes where I did not have to work too hard to get an A, but on the other hand, I had to work extremely hard to get an A- in English.

Also, what’s the language requirement for incoming lowers. I’ve done Latin for 4 years (this year I finished Latin 3 Honors), so would I still have to take a placement test to verify that I’m at that level? If there is a requirement, I’d actually want to start new language. Any tips on that?.

@Silverca07 Look on page 6 in this book: https://www.exeter.edu/sites/default/files/documents/PEA_COI_17_18.pdf

Is there an adviser or someone who can help you plan out your courses if you’re an incoming lower?

@silvercat1 you seem to know shockingly little about a school you applied to. Go on the website and read. Its all on there.

@silvercat1 Were you accepted to PEA? If so in the materials you were sent upon acceptance you should have seen information about a temporary advisor to whom you could reach out. Later in the summer, you will be assigned a permanent advisor.

I think this person just came off the wait list so they had likely stored all the info in past permanent memory…

Yeah, I just got off of the waitlist 3 days ago and my package is coming today. Thx

@Silverca07 Congratulations and welcome to the PEA community.

@silverca07 congratulations!! Feel free to pm me if you or your parents have additional questions- we are a very experienced Exeter family. Having had multiple kids attend over the last 7 years with 2 kids still in attendance.

So SwimKid was invited to preseason. The email said they will move into their regular dorms groom the sport specif one on Tuesday, but new student check/parent orientation in is on wed. Should I plan on bringing all his stuff up on tues and then come back again on wed? Or would I just let him do his thing with the bare minimum on tues and then head up with his stuff on wed?

@momof3swimmers Move in on Tuesday is a lot easier than Wednesday because there are fewer people moving in. Wednesday is just more volume. We live in NYC and come up for preseason. In our case, we’ll come up Monday night, stay locally, and then head back on Tuesday evening. The most important thing, I think, is to get to meet your child’s advisor in person. The rest of the orientation I found not nearly as critical. The sessions are larger and by nature more impersonal.

So it’s better to plan on Tuesday evening vs during the day? It’s my other kiddos’ first day of school and one has a 1/2 day and one has a full day so I trying to see if I need to plan for sitters for multiple days and at what time. How do parents with multiple kids figure all this stuff out lol!!

I only have the one so I can’t speak to the multiple kids issue. Once your child has access to his/her room you can move in whenever you want, day or night.

Move in Tuesday morning is ideal. Way less stressful and crowded. The program on Wednesday, in our experience is more to make patents feel comfortable leaving their kids. I really enjoyed meeting the dorm faculty, dorm mates and parents. Many people form relationships this way, so might be worth the extra day.
We have kids in 2 colleges in 2 different states plus 2 at Exeter- so basically chaos for all.

Hey all! Can not believe I am heading up to Exeter in a week! However, I had a question regarding leaving campus. I know that there is a Cinema that is located 8 miles away from Exeter (5 min drive). Since it is within the 10 mile boundary, I should be allowed to go there (after consulting with my dorm faculty). However, it is a 35 minute walk, so I was wondering if I could use services like Uber/ Lyft to go to the movies.
