Yeah, haven’t seen any either. Again, pretty sure nothing about Johnson has been released. Counselor seemed confident

What is the acceptance rate for school of engineering?

Hi @Alamalaki,

In 2013, the acceptance rate for the school of engineering was 52.7%.

Hi, vschuSCU:
I am writing the supplemental essay of SCU. The second prompt asks:

“Santa Clara University’s strategic vision promises to educate citizens and leaders of competence, conscience, and compassion and cultivate knowledge and faith to build a more humane, just, and sustainable world. What aspect of SCU’s strategic vision appeals to you? Why?”

As I find all three aspects, competence, conscience, and compassion are important to education, can I just write three aspects all appeal to me, since the prompt does not ask what appeals to me most?

My father thinks the prompt is asking for only one aspect. Just want to make sure with you. I do not want to make a big mistake on essay writing as I really want to go to SCU.

What do you think?

Look forward to your kind reply. Many thanks!

It seems obvious that your approach is correct, it is how YOU view those aspects of education - when writing a college essay like this there is no wrong way to interpret that. If all aspects are important to you, that is the right essay to write. You dad is not wrong, however, if he were writing the essay and felt strongly about one of those, it would be ok for HIM to write about one. The best essay is the one that comes from your interpretation, your mind, and your heart. Frankly and personally, I don’t see how you could see one of those without the others, they are all key and I would bundle them into a “singular cohesive aspect,” as you have already figured out. So I would tend to write the essay similar to the one your are already considering in your mind.

Hi @sinderala,

The reply right above mine is absolutely correct! Your approach would be completely appropriate as a response. The counselors are interested in knowing your interpretation of the essay question.

My daughter is very interested in Santa Clara University and has applied but not heard back yet. Will it hurt her that we haven’t been able to go visit the campus? She is very busy with extracurricular activities and we haven’t been able to schedule a trip to CA to visit Santa Clara. Is there anything more she can do to demonstrate interest? If she gets in, we plan on visiting during spring break when her activities slow down.

Hi @NESeattleMom,

The counselors understand that not all students are able to make it out for a visit, so it won’t hurt her all! If she would like to show her interest, I would recommend having her email the counselor that she is assigned to, and explaining to them how much she wants to go to Santa Clara. You can find the name and email of the counselor based on the area you live in here: http://www.scu.edu/ugrad/contact/map.cfm

Thanks so much!

On the Common App, is it possible for my counselor to complete the Counselor Recommendation portion after the January 7th deadline?

Many thanks for your kind reply, CADREAMIN!

Many thanks for your kind help, vschuSCU

Hi @malacath10,

That’s something you would probably have to ask an admissions counselor, since it is a unique situation. You can email a counselor at admission@scu.edu, and they’ll be able to answer your question!

Hi, I’m incoming class of 2020 student and I would like to hear about what dorms are like in SCU. Many people suggest swig and I wonder what’s the experience living in Swig or other dorms like. Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi @Milliac,

I highly recommend checking out the page that explains what the Residential Learning Communities (dorms) are all about. I used it when deciding which community I wanted to live in my first year. It was super helpful, and I loved where I ended up living in Mclaughlin-Walsh. Here’s the link: https://www.scu.edu/living/residential-living-options/rlc-undergraduate-housing/

From what I’ve heard from friends about Swig, it’s a very social community and it’s easy to make friends there, but it’s hard to find quiet time sometimes. For this reason, many people who live in swig make use of the library a lot. If you’re interested in living in a traditional style residence hall, Campisi, Sanfilippo, Mclaughlin-Walsh and Dunne also offer that set-up, but with a smaller community, so their still very social, but if you need to study in your room you can. There are also suite-style accommodations, which are doubles that share a common space with another room or multiple rooms. The common space is either a bathroom, a “living” room, or a full kitchen with living room. These suite style rooms are in Graham, Casa Italiana, and Sobrato, and you’ll find they are a little more quiet, but there’s always plenty of events that are great for meeting people and being social!

Hope that helped!

Does anyone know if it’s better to declare a major vs declaring undecided at SCU? My son is still uncertain about what he wants his major to be but is a good student and really liked the school when we visited over the summer.

Hi @gandsmeyer,

I would say if your son has a pretty good idea of the field he wants to go into, it would be best for him to apply to the college that best fits that field within SCU. He can always declare his major later within the field, but there are some difficulties associated with transferring colleges if he decides he wants to do something different. I came into SCU undeclared in the College of Arts & Sciences and it’s been a good fit for me here, but say if I wanted to transfer into the business school it is possible, there are just requirements and applications.

Hello, @vschuSCU! I was wondering if you can help me with this minor dilemma:

Since Santa Clara University requires IELTS scores for international students, would they want the official test scores to be sent via DHL or does an electronic copy meet their requirements?
It would be remarkable if an electronic copy is accepted by them as mailing through DHL is difficult and pricey where I am currently located!

Thank you! x

Hi @M7MDAL,

SCU actually prefers that you send your scores electronically, uploaded through the Common Application by your guidance counselor or your school administrator.

Hi, has the prompt for the Johnsons Scholars been released yet? I realize it’s due on the 25th so there is still some time left but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. Thank you!
