@ShiningOrange‌ what is the town like? i am from a more rural area and looking for a bit of a “culture change” as to say and would really like a good college town to go to school at! I am also going to Winter Campus Day on the 16th, if there is anything specific that you think we should look at that would be great too! I am also planning to be a business major

@ShininingOrange thank you so much for answering my questions! One more thing, what would you recommend emailing them? I know you said programs, but what should I be asking about exactly that will get across my interest?

Do most students who don’t join frats decide to live on campus for all four years?

What percentage of sophomores, juniors, and seniors live on campus?

@ShiningOrange Thanks for your perspective on our awesome University. Just a couple of gaps I’d like to help fill in;
The current average ACT composite score is 26. While there is no minimum to apply or be considered at Syracuse University, 26 can be considered a point of reference.

While all of our buildings on campus are regularly maintained and updated, Lawrinson Hall will be celebrating it’s 50th birthday this year. However, Ernie Davis is one of the newest buildings on campus.

@JV0815 Like you I came from a very rural area to live in Syracuse. My impression is that it has the best of both worlds. There is an active urban environment, but Syracuse also has some beautiful greenery and rolling hills.

If you come to visit on Monday the 16th, feel free to grab me and say hi! Just look for “Rand”

I have a question regarding my application. The application required two recommendations (I had three in my CA) but I apparently only chose one teacher. The weird thing is that the CA let me submit it. It’s about 4 AM and I just noticed it so I have no idea what to do. I applied for regular decision.

@jdc258‌ I thought the deadline was Jan 15 or something like that. If you added just one teacher, then you can still add the “add another” teacher. Click "add another"on the Recommenders and FERPA tab.

Or you can just email them (have teacher email them, preferred) at orange@syr.edu and with explanation.

The best thing to do is call them. They will find the best solution. 315-443-3611

@turtleneck7‌ Students (Greek life and non) are required to live on campus for two years, after which, they may choose to live of campus. However, most students tend to stay in campus. (it generally fluctuates between 65 and 70% of upperclassmen that stay on campus). Mostly because of the community driven lifestyle of campus; students generally tend to stay nearby. Even the students who move off campus are typically across the street in private housing apartments.

How hard is it to transfer to newhouse ? Does anyone know anyone who did ? How high were their GPA’s?

How long does it take to get used to Syracuse winters? I’m on the East Coast and have experienced some particularly cold winters myself, but none as cold as the Syracuse ones.

Hi @jv0815,

sorry for the late reply! I have been super busy this past week. I got an email about the Winter Campus event a few days ago, and it asked us to say hello to you guys when we see you in Whitman, haha. So I might see you tomorrow, you never know. Anyways, Syracuse is a pretty typical college town. It has more of a city feel, but not like NYC or LA. It has a HUGE mall that’s about 10 minutes away if travelling by car. That’s usually where students go on weekends. It contains department stores and a Regal movie theatre. Oh and it also has a ropes course and other fun activities!! I would say that if you’re from a more rural area, Syracuse would definitely open your eyes. However, the University itself is kinda secluded, for all the supermarkets and large shopping centers are at least 10 minutes away. Overall, even though it isn’t NYC, the city and the school have enough things to keep you occupied.

The famous Marshall street on campus is often the hangout spot for students. It is right across from Whitman, the management school. There’s Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Jimmy John’s, a few asian restaurants, and a Bubble tea place! So, definitely check that out when you arrive tomorrow.

The Whitman building is, in my opinion, the most modern and prettiest building on campus  I am biased because I am a business major. But if you get a chance, check out the classrooms(which i believe you will). You will notice that ALL the classrooms have what I call it “computer chairs,” you know, the ones that have wheels and that you can roll around in! On the third floor, i believe, are where the study rooms are for undergrad students. They are sound proof and they’re great spots for team work!

That’s all I have for ya. I hope you enjoy the trip and stay warm! It is freezing here…

Best,
~ShiningOrange~

P.S. if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. I will keep an eye on this post tmrw!

@engineering2015 Go on the SU website and see what events they’re currently or will be having. You could even talk about past events. Last week was Career Fair week, so you could talk about the opportunities that you will have through the Career Fairs. Research the clubs that they have, and mention which ones you’re interested in joining. You wanna show them that you did your HW and that you’re already looking up what the school can do to help you succeed. I hope that makes sense.

Best of luck!

@turtleneck7 haha, you got the expert to answer your question and I agree with @Syracuserand. Freshmen and Sophomores are required to dorm, unless your home is within a certain radius. After those two years, most students rent apartments close to the campus. A very small number of juniors and seniors do continue to dorm, though. But I don’t know what kind of conditions/requirements you need to meet in order to do that.

@creative5547 I am not exactly clear about the process. What I do know is that if you want to transfer to Newhouse after you have started college, then you would need to take a list of required courses, and then the administration will accept SU students based on their GPAs. Naturally, the higher your GPA, the more likely you will get accepted. If you are transferring into Newhouse from another university, then that’s a different process. You would need to go through the application process again, which includes the essays, and test scores, and GPA.

@jdc258 the best thing to do is to call the admissions office. That’s the best advice I can give you : /

Best of luck!

@kmd549 I am in my second semester of college, and I can tell you that I am still not used to the brutal weather. Personally, I don’t think it is that bad. The wind makes everything worse, but the snow is really pretty, and it makes the campus look so much more beautiful. If you wear enough clothing, then even the wind isn’t an issue. It didn’t really start getting freezing until late october, maybe? December-March are the worst months. Then the snow starts to melt in April, and school will be out by early May, so it’s bearable.

what year students live on the south campus? Is the south campus all apartment type housing?

I’m an incoming freshman fall 2015 and I paid my application/housing fee on myslice a few days ago… I have $0.00 due it says so when will I be getting an email saying they received my payment and/or the email containing my SUemail? Also, when will my housing application be available on myslice?
