Dorm Question

While on my campus tour, we didn't go into the dorms. I was just wondering how they were and how students feel about them. Any information on them would be great :)

If you get accepted, the accepted students tour lets you visit a dorm. As a parent who has seen a number of the dorms. I would say that they are all adequate and some (like Ernie Davis) are fantastic. There is a unique concept called split doubles - which actually work very well. A small room has a wall down the middle (with closets on either side)which gives a great deal of privacy in a small space. For upperclassmen, the dorms are excellent. Location is a big factor in the dorms as some of them require a long walk or bus to the main campus.

I’m a student at Syracuse and I would say the best dorms are in Ernie Davis and Lawrinson. They are large, new, and spacious. Lawrinson is in an awful location, however. And Ernie Davis is by far the best dorm on campus in terms of location and what it has to offer (there’s a dining hall and a gym inside.)

Worst rooms are in Shaw. But there’s a dining hall in the dorm.

Right now, I live in Haven. The location is nice (short walk to most places and right next to Frats and Marshall), but it’s far from the Dome. And we have the split double’s that are honestly the most ideal if you like to have your own space. I personally love it.

Kclark - what are your care abouts? Distance to campus, or library? Dining hall? Other? Send out your druthers and we’ll see.

What other dorms are in good areas besides Ernie Davis. My daughter applied to SU and if accepted will attend. I want to make sure she is in a good area especially as a freshman…she is not city smart as she has grown up in a small town/rural area. Thanks in advance:-)

What I don’t like about SU housing is that there are no dedicated Freshman dorms. Freshman are housed with upperclassman. The colleges where my older two kids attend both have Freshman only housing. Maybe it’s not an issue but it seems Freshman only housing would be safer and ease the transition.

Absolutely agree with you about the freshman!

Hi…I believe this year Shaw is an all-freshman dorm. Every dorm has some advantages and disadvantages. My daughter has lived in Shaw and Haven, and has been happy in both of them!

Brewster/Boland also seems to be a basically freshman dorm complex, even if not officially.

It has some advantages including new renovation, its own dining hall (Brockway), a gym, a computer lab and a Burger King for when the dining hall is closed. Most rooms have the split double format so there is some privacy for each roommate.

Even though it’s a bit of a walk down some stairs from the quad, not the best location, there is a real comaraderie according to those I know there, including my child and friends and others I know from other years. Each floor has a lounge and the kids get close with the others on their floor especially as well as others throughout the dorm. There is a pride in the place, even though kids usually stay only one year as freshman because as upper classmen they can pick better dorms. You can sometimes notice kids on campus wearing BBB sweatshirts and there are plenty of happy stories from the kids.

So even the “bad” dorms aren’t so bad.

What about Watson?

Watson is a great dorm - good location, near Ernie Davis for gym and cafeteria and big rooms. But it’s hard for freshmen to get in there.

How are rooms assigned? Is there a random system, or a lottery that lets you choose? And is there enough housing for all 4 years, or do a lot of upperclassman have to live off campus?

Random lottery for freshman unless you are accepted in to a learning community

There is a hierarchy for housing. I do not know of any seniors on campus per se, but junior and seniors do have seniority for the lottery…

Btw, Lawrinson is fine for freshman…nbd honestly…and they have renovated a number of the floors there (not sure which floor they are up to now)

Many, not all, upperclassman do live off campus. But remember… that can mean in sorority/frat houses, or off campus apts, many of which are just across the street from some of the dorms.

The dorms are better than at a lot of schools. Dorm life is not perfect at any school, but I think even though certain dorms are better than others, overall the Syracuse dorms are all generally pretty good.

My daughter is a freshman and lives in Day, at the Mount Olympus building. She loves her dorm, open double. And she lives in a learning community. She does do a lot of walking around the univeristy but she doesn’t mind. Her Learning Community is great, I’ve met some of the kids and they are a fantastic group. They study together and stick together in their activities, and the boys are all protective of the girls.

Its been a great experience for my D. So far so good. Thank God.
