Syracuse uses the common app so you will have to apply through there and I believe that the 2015-2016 common app (which would be for upcoming seniors) comes out in August. You should check commonapp.org for more info.
Hi -
S is starting in the fall, just confirming SU dorms have Twin XL mattresses. Thanks!!
is it possible to double major in different schools, like for example management and political science? would i have to apply to both? is it popular to double major in different schools? thanks!
@cameron121 Yup, beds are Twin extra long!
@jjohnross Hi! It is very common to double major. I am one, myself, Marketing (Whitman) and IT (iSchool). You can double major within the same school or between different schools. Sometimes, you just have to call or email admissions letting them know that you wish to double major. You should talk to your academic adviser when school starts. I am not too sure of the details.
Thx!
Thanks
@jjohnross
I just wanted to shed a little extra light on the ability to take more than one major at Syracuse University. There are three different ways to go about it, with varying levels of difficulty:
- “Double Majoring” - This is the hardest one. It essentially means that there is no established structure. These are generally two majors that don’t have a lot in common. Double majoring means you will have to complete the requirements for each major, even if it takes you more than 4-5 years. The term double majoring can also be used to define taking two majors within the same school or college at Syracuse. Please note that some schools and colleges may restrict or caution students against certain combinations.
- "Combined Enrollment" - This means there is a structure, and that structure adds on a year. The only programs at Syracuse University that are eligible for combined enrollment are The College of Engineering & Computer Science and The College of Arts & Science (one from each)
- "Dual Enrollment" - This is by far the most popular option. Dual enrollment means there is a structure, and it stays at four years. Syracuse University has determined all the programs that fit well enough together, that you can take two majors within the same time frame.
Take a look at page 6-7 in the viewbook to see all the dual and combined options.

@SyracuseRand , thank you for posting this info, as well as the viewbook! Can a student major in one school and minor in another? For example, major in Finance and minor in History? Would it still be possible to finish in 4 years? Thanks!
@SyracuseRand Thank you so much that helps a ton! I’m definitely going to apply for the Whitman/Newhouse dual degree. Is it harder to gain admission when applying for a dual degree? Is it required to apply before freshman year, or could you enter the program later? Thank you so much!
@uwalummom Yes! Absolutely. Minoring generally tends to be around 6 classes and is encouraged. It’s very likley to minor and still complete a degree in a normal timeframe.
@jjohnross Applying for a dual program generally has the same competitive level as the schools/colleges your applying to. In this situation, Newhouse and Whitman have been our most competitive schools at SU. If you enter one program initially, it is possible to add the dual later on.
Is the iSchool difficult to get accepted into? @SyracuseRand.
Also, how generous are the financial aid packages?
Thank you @SyracuseRand - that’s great to know!
