Do you know when we’ll be notified? I know it says “By December 18”, so that means we could find out any time before, right? I know the deadline for submission was extended because of the Common App issues, but if I submitted WAY before the deadline, any chance I’d find out sooner?

I am an OOS white female from a highly acclaimed public high school. My Common App esay is about how I’m content in the place that stresses me out the most and gives me the most work to do because life is about having purpose blah blah. I have a deceased parent and financial circumstances due to the death. I am majored in Astrophysics, oh and know this is my top reach school…other than Tufts

That’s about it really. I know there are many factors in choosing admits however I’md just like to know how I compare.

Dan or any other admissions person from Tufts doesn’t do chance me posts. This is purely Q & A, and if you did ED 1 for Tufts, you will find out a week or so from now. Like Dan always says “you know who you are”, so if you feel pretty awesome about all of the stats you just posted then you are probably an awesome applicant. Don’t question yourself! :D

Is it more likely that we’ll find out on the 13th or the following week? AHH!!

Here’s what Lee Coffin posted on the blog today: "After all the talking and traveling and blogging, the first members of Tufts’ Class of 2018 are being selected. The Selection Committee convened yesterday for the first session of this admissions cycle … " Apparently there’s more to follow, he says

Times like this I enjoy watching Greek tragedies since they remind me that there’s someone in a fictional world with bigger problems than me… #OedipusRex

Hahaha. Oh man, @nomanator, that actually made me laugh out loud. Dark.

Yeah, I’m not going to post with when decisions will be released, but I can tell you how decision release will work.

You’ll get an email letting you know decisions are available, and that email will also contain the link to where you’ll go to find your decision. The email goes out to all of you at the same time, and you can’t check your decision until the email goes out. There’s no reason to log into TAMS to check until then. Hitting refresh in your inbox is a good deal more effective than hitting refresh in TAMS.

I, of course, understand how badly you want to know your decision, and I know how stressful waiting can be. Trust us to take the time we need to do our work thoughtfully, and to be the best possible stewards of your applications.

Dear Dan,

I am an international applicant, and I was wondering how Tufts calculates the GPA from IB predicted scores?

I have also heard that the IB predicted scores have very little weight compared to the ACT/SAT and SAT II scores. Is this true? I would have thought that they are of same importance.

Thank you!

Hey Dan,
Tufts/NEC duel degree question.
Are these applicants looked at any differently from a Tufts admissions perspective?

@Serendi - we don’t calculate a GPA, basically. Typically, international schools will send us at least term marks and usually predicted IB results. If your school provides a GPA (and some do), then we use that, otherwise we just use your predicted IB results as they are. No need to calculate anything.

Your IB work, of which your predicted grades are reflective, is hugely important. I would suspect the same for most other selective universities in the US, but I can’t say for certain. For Tufts, your IB work is tremendously important: more important than the SATs. In that sense, it’s no different for our international students than it would be for our domestic ones; your performance in your high school curriculum generally receives more heft than your SATs.

@Cluelessbass: Nope! Exactly the same.

Hi Dan,
I’m an international student and am currently reading the AMA you did on reddit(it’s great to know that Tufts has such awesome people in the admission team). I wanted to thank you and everyone else who is a part of the admissions blog for making the application process both easier and more personal for people such as myself who aren’t all that familiar with US college procedures. On to my question, I have written several drafts of my personal statement and am worried that it might be tedious for an admissions officer to read because it contains several seemingly unrelated topics. What I mean is, although I’m writing about a personal experience, I have added stuff that might be unrelated to the experience but is very much related to me as a person. As an admissions officer, would this kind of an essay come off as positive or negative if viewed among other essays because it contains a several smaller topics(3 in total) and not one whole? I’m looking for guidelines for writing an essay that is both interesting and reflective at the same time.

Thank you.

Dan,
Thank you. FYI: My S would have loved to have been able to send the message that Tufts/NEC was his first choice and apply ED. He was unable to do that with the duel degree program. Something Tufts may want to look into in the future.

Dan,

What are term marks?

And thank you for the clarification!

Dan the man with the plan :D

@Jeffarse (which I’m choosing to pronounce in my head as Jef-Farce): There’s no good answer for that. Honestly, I don’t think it’s hard to pull off what you’re describing in a really effective manner, but it all depends on how you execute it. It’s hard to give you firm guidelines other than to say that the quality of the essay rests most in how effectively it communicates how you think and what ideas you choose to imbue with value.

So long as your essay conveys your personality and your intellect, it’s hard to find a format or idea that won’t work.

@Cluelessbass - we’d be pleased to do it, but because we conduct our admissions process independently (and that’s something that is extremely unlikely to change), there’s not much that can be done there. We do have a student or two applying ED and also applying to the NEC/SMFA programs, but they do so knowing that if the NEC turns them down, they are still partners to the ED agreement with Tufts.

@Serendi - Basically just the grades on your transcript. I’m using the phrase ‘term marks’ to differentiate those grades from exam grades (O Levels as an example) and from predicted grades that international students might have for the A Levels or the IB.

@Dan
That’s exactly hos it’s pronounced.
Seeing how you’re open to questions bothe here and on the Tufts admissions blog, I think I’ll ask some more questions regarding life at Tufts(even though you’re not the admissions officer responsible for my part of the world)

How many internationals are there at Tufts?

Also, what do you look for in an international applicant? I have read the blog posts, but still I doubt the admissions process is the same for US and non-US citizens(or is it?!).

What is the average international student like(regarding predispositions, awards etc.)?

Thank you

BTW, you guys are seriously the best! For someone like me who can’t afford to go to the university in person, the admissions blog(and other social sites) is extremely helpful. You get to see both the admissions process and the college life through the eyes of others, which makes you feel like you belong in that type of community…

Dan,
I heard that decisions do not get released on weekends. I’m not asking the date the decisions will be released, but is it possible to have them go out on a weekend or only during the week?

Thanks so much.

Dan the man with the plan will probably not see your question until Monday… sorry buddy :/

Dan,

It’s that time of night (4 AM), just a few days before the ED1 admissions notification, that I feel the urge to ask you this question:

I applied ED1 to Tufts last month and although my family is pretty sure we will not receive financial aid if I am accepted to Tufts, we decided it would be a good idea to try. However, I was completely unaware that the CSS and tax forms needed to be sent in by December 1st. I must have missed it on the TAMS website. Last Sunday (December 8th), my father submitted these forms as soon as I realized they were supposed to be handed in earlier. It seemed that Tufts officially received these forms by December 10th.

I’m extremely sorry for this late date, and I hope it did not disrupt my admissions process and evaluation. With the decision date approaching, I just wanted to ask if these forms/the late return of these forms have anything to do with my admissions decision. I really don’t want to be wallowing in regret, in the chance I miss my dream of getting accepted into Tufts. I really, really love your school.

Thank you so much!

p.s. I emailed the admissions officer that deals with my area just now… I really hope I am not doing this all too late…
