Ask the Admissions Officer

Dan, as far as you know, what are the differences between Tufts’ admissions process and those at other highly selective schools? I love how open you guys are about yours, and I’d like to be able to apply that advice to the other schools I’m applying to as best I can.

For Option A would it be appropriate to submit a drawing portfolio with an explanation of how it relates to the quote? Tufts doesn’t have an art supplement and I’d like for my art to be shown in some way.

Hello Dan! Just curious, what were some of the essays from the recent ED 1 round that you loved?

Hi Dan,

I’m considering taking a dual enrollment course at a local community college for second semester. I applied to Tufts regular decision and indicated on my common app that I would be taking an honors level anatomy class, but I honestly think I would be more challenged at the community college. I would prefer being challenged, but I’m concerned that the dual enrollment course would negatively affect my application since the only science course offered is “Intro to Nutrition.” Do you have any recommendation in this regard? Normally I would just take the class I feel will challenge me more, but with so much on the line I figured I would seek your incite first.

Thank you so much!

p.s. I LOVED your “Celebrate Your Nerdy Side” response! :)

Hi Dan!
I was just wondering if there was a definite date for ED II results to be released on?
Thanks!

Hey Dan,
Should we let admissions at Tufts know about this?
So frustrated with my Son’s school. They sent out midyear grades on Thursday to Tufts and reported his GPA/Class ranking. The problem is the GPA/class ranking was as of the end of the first qtr. He had a great 2nd qrt and is only one of 2 kids in the school juggling 5 AP classes. He knows his GPA will be higher and he suspects that he has moved up in the class ranking (he was 15 out 480 at beginning of year and 12 at end of first qtr.) He is fairly certain he has broken into the top 10. After he got no where with the school, I called the school today and they said they use a third party to do this and they are not sure when they will have his final information. They said that they didn’t want to provide incorrect information. I informed them that that ship had already sailed as they are sending out GPA and ranking that is incorrect. What if somebody that was number 10 had a tough qtr and their transcript shows a higher GPA and better class ranking? It is sad that the ranking and GPA he worked hard for is not being reported to schools.

Hi Dan!, I was wondering if there are still spots for an interview in Southern Massachusetts. Some of my friends and I have been waiting for an interview opportunity for Tufts, but we haven’t received anything yet.

can an RD applicant submit ancillary portfolio type of materials showing extra dimensions to the applicant such as videos of singing ?

Hi there. Thanks for making yourself available. My daughter is a junior doing AP and IB classes. 4.0/4.56 GPA. She’s taking IB Chem Honors that’s a two-year course. She wants to take AP Physics Honors next year but is afraid of leaving IB Chem halfway thru the course. She’s not planning on taking the IB Chem test. I told her to go ahead and take Physics, thinking it is the more challenging course. Do you see that as a problem? Thanks again.

FWIW, Dan’s no longer at Tufts…

@DonGately,

Wao. Did not know that. Surprised! He had been so helpful. Answered every question. I did not see any other school doing this. Hope Tufts could continue this way to connect with students and parents. No wonder did not see his post this cycle. Where did he go, do you know? Hope for the best for him!

According to Linkedin Dan has been on the board of advisers at Dexterity Global (an education non-profit) since April 2013 and he left Tufts in August 2014.

I am a highschool sophomore. I currently am in Spanish 3 and French 2. They are both college prep classes, meaning they are non-honors and therefore, hurt my GPA. I was planning on taking each language until graduation, but now I’m thinking that I should drop a language so I could take an AP class instead. This AP class would fill up the space on the schedule where the language used to be. What would colleges prefer to see, 2 languages being taken all four years of high school? Or 1 language taken all four years, another language taken 2 years, and 2 years of AP classes? Thank you.
