is it possible to sublet an apartment for a semester and then get my guaranteed housing for spring

i didn't send in my enrollment for FPF. i don't know why but i was waiting to send that in until i decided i was going to go there. i didn't want to waste $100. i had no idea spots filled up that fast. it says that the enrollment form is already closed. what else can i do??? will there still be spots??

i think i'm just going to end up going to UCSD if i don't have any chance to get in FPF...

It's possible to get an apartment for a semester and move into the dorms 2nd semester, but from what I can tell, you are not guaranteed housing for spring. I haven't seen anything on any Berkeley website say so, and in fact they suggest the opposite. So until I see something definitive, I'm assuming that you are not guaranteed housing for spring. But you can always apply for housing in the spring and some people get in.

Spots do fill up fast. However, there's a waitlist that you can put yourself onto. There are students who sent in the deposit and reserved a spot even though they didn't know which college they would attend. Some of them will choose another college which means spots will open up. Send FPF an email if you want to put yourself on the waitlist:

errr this may not particularly be concerned about spring admits.....anyways. it says that im missing the US Citizenship Certification Form and the Parent Income Verification document...well it said on the site that they already sent a form but i hadn't received anything so i emailed someone and she said that she would request them to send it again (just about the parent income form....i forgot to ask about the citizenship one ughhhh. unless its the same form?) . I still haven't gotten anything even though it's been a week...

does their financial aid offer stay the same whenever you turn it in? i mean...if a person turns all of their stuff in in the beginning vs. someone who turns it in late...would the first person get more...? it may be a stupid question....but im paranoid now since i still haven't received anything =/

The financial aid should stay the same whenever you turn it in. Berkeley usually takes a while to get things done so just be patient.

how likely would it be for me to get a spot?

The earlier you send the course form, the earlier do you receive your schedule?

okay, i am a spring admit, not doing FPF
today, i talked some Cal students, they said that housing is not guaranteed the first year (spring semester) for us. And that there is a chance that we don't get dorms. Coming from southern california, that would be the worst situation. is there any way i can make sure i get dorming for the first year? Apply early, etc?

Thanks

Well, that depends on how many people have already put themselves on the waitlist and how many spots open up. Since I don’t have that information…I can’t tell you how likely it is for you to get a spot. Sorry. What I can tell you is the sooner you put yourself on the waitlist, the better your chances.

Umm…I don’t remember. Logic tells me no.

Hmm…not that I know of. It’s probably also based on the lottery system so applying early won’t help. Just hope for the best. If you don’t get housing it’s only one semester so not too bad. Usually spots open up in the spring.

i've searched this forum for dorms, and my question still wasn't answered..

Besides teh minor difference in distance and looks on the outside, are there any other differences amongst the 3 units? (e.g. one tends to be the "party" one or one tends to be more studious?.. i would think it varies year to year...). I do know that units 1 and 2 have gyms and that unit 3 doesn't..

anything else?

I got CalGrant, around 6000 dollars.
But, I have to call to change my California Aid Report, which listed LA as my first choice. In addition, I have to either put "on campus" housing or "off campus" housing, but dorm spots are not guaranteed for FPF studnets, and come out in July, a month after the deadline to change your CAR is.
How does this go?
TY

for FPF classes, after we turn in our course selection form, can we change anything? Because for one of the classes, it says the professor is TBA. I want to turn it in early but if I dont want that professor...could i change it afterwards possibly..?

MyBerkeleyApp changed. Line saying enroll for fpf gone
Anyone else have this?. I had my check mark there saying my spot was reserved

Okay, so there's the already mentioned difference of distance and outside appearance. Unit 3 is older but slightly closer to campus. Actually Unit 1 is closer if you have your classes on the north side. Unit 1 and Unit 2 are closer to Crossroads (Dining Commons) whereas Unit 3 has its own DC called Cafe 3. It's not as large but the food is usually better. Also Unit 3 has Bear Market, which is a mini-market where you can use your meal points to purchase food items. Although, if you live in Unit 1 and 2 you can also go there, you just have to walk a little. Unit 3 is known as the "party dorm" because more upperclassmen tend to live in there (still not that many), although I think it varies from floor to floor more than anything. It's hard to generalize about one dorm. Unit 1 and 2 have academic centers downstairs which include an exercise room, music rooms (w/ piano), study rooms, computer center, etc. I'm not sure if unit 3 has that, but Unit 3 is closer to the gym. Also, theme housing is in unit 3 while unit 1 has mini-suites (usually second-years) and unit 2 has apartments (upper-classmen/transfers only).

But mostly, minor differences.

This is a good question. I'm not that familiar with Cal Grants myself. Call the office and ask if you can. If I had to guess, you probably would just put "on-campus" and if you don't get housing then call them up and tell them your status has changed. Call them and see how you're supposed to deal with this situation.

Yeah, I think a week or two before school starts they'll email you asking if you want to make changes, and even a few weeks after school starts I think you can still add and drop classes until a certain deadline.

just confirming. One the housing app we put Fall Extension not incoming freshmen

if we are going to do the CC route for spring admits, who will help us plan our classes for the fall at a CC? a UCB advisor, the CC advisor, or fend for ourselves? Since we are not allowed to go to Orientation Day til later this yr, how am i suppose to know what classes exactly to take at CC?

Yes.

Good question. Spring admits don’t have access to Berkeley advisors in the fall, as you may have guessed. FPF students don’t have access to them either, although the FPF staff would help them out. As for you…I would guess CC advisor is your best bet. There’s also a website called assist.org that helps you figure out which courses at a CC transfers to Berkeley and its equivalent class at Berkeley. Using that and the breadth requirements / major requirements that you can find on the Berkeley / L&S websites, I’m sure you’ll be able to figure something out.

i heard FPF students who get dorms are usually struck with triples or not their first choices. What are the chances of me getting a double in unit 3.
I live like 30 min away..

Well if you're a FPF student, then your chances of getting a double are not that good, but that's because most freshmen don't have a good chance of getting a double. Freshmen tend to be the ones who are stuck in triples. Like I've said before, it's hard to say your chances. It depends on a lot of things which we don't have info about yet.

Should we apply for classes ASAP? Because I'm really not sure what classes I need to take (I thought CalSO would help with that).
