asking for college suggestions for a michigan student-athlete, 3.25 GPA/ 24 ACT

Look at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, University of Puget Sound, Willamette, University of Redlands, Westminster in Salt Lake City--for a start, just to see what their stats are like and then use the College Board site to find "similar schools"....Good luck

does FSU sound like a reach I didnt really seem to get a straight answer on that

Your stats are below the middle 50%, see:

Office of Institutional Research - Florida State University

The middle 50% for the ACT was 25-28...High School GPA for the middle 50% of incoming freshmen was 3.5-4.0

[/quote]

48% were admitted overall, not sure if it is harder or easier for out-of-state students.

John, my son has some similarities to you. We looked at FSU and UF. It is hard to answer because the GPAs/ACTs and admissions are so skewed by the BrightFutures. I will say this, we dropped the Florida schools because the out of state percentage ATTENDING is so very, very, low - I think FSU had the highest of the big schools, and it was only 13%ish.

If you are interested in fun and sun, take a look at Auburn. It is a comfy ride to the beach and a comfy ride to Atlanta, with great school spirit. Similar in offerings to MSU - it is the Ag and Engineering school.

We visited in MSU in Feb - wow - DH and I liked the school, but DS thought it was a little too cold. He has a 3.25 and 27 on the ACT.

thanks

I personally like the cold (huge snowboarder) but I definitely want to look into warm, sunny places kind of had enough of the cold cuz it lasts for a long time

Look at Western State College in Colorado for snow and kids very heavily into the outdoors. Kids from all 50 states, nice contingent from Michigan as they actively recruit in the state. You would be accepted and might get merit money if you hit the 25 on the ACT. We know several alumni and several friends kids who have very much liked this school. For warm climate, don't discount Santa Barbara City College transferring to UCSB. SBCC used to be the old UCSB campus, on the ocean, large contingent of out of state students. One of the strongest city colleges in California could be a gateway for you into the UCs. Look at the University of Montana, Look at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff or University of Arizona. If budget isn't a problem for warm weather look at the Unversity of San Diego - a friend's son absolutely loves that school and he could have gone just about anywhere (financially). Eckerd and Auburn would also be good ones to check out. Here's some more for you to check out that are in interesting places (sounds like you want something geographically interesting) and would be good bets with your stats: Salve Regina, Endicott, St. Michael's. My son looked at Westminster in Salt Lake City (very small) but he preferred the University of Utah - that might be an option, too. So far you've said "snow" or "warm"...what else are you interested in?

strong microbiology or marine biology program with a good pre med advisor

Well that changes things a bit! Probably don't want to be in Colorado, Utah, Montana or Arizona for marine biology! Look at Eckerd in Florida, Roger Williams, UMass Dartmouth (instead of Amherst) and for something really different, read up on College of the Atlantic..tiny but you might find it interesting. If you can give up the thought of marine biology then you open alot more potential doors.

Eckerd is definitely worth considering -- top notch marine biology and good record of getting students into med school.

really more interested in microbiology than marine

do i have a chance of getting into eckerd. i found the admission estimation website that says I have like a 30% chance. Its called mychances.net.

You are looking pretty good for Eckerd (<a href="http://www.eckerd.edu/admissions/index.php?f=lookfor):%5B/url%5D">http://www.eckerd.edu/admissions/index.php?f=lookfor):</a></p>

The average unweighted GPA for an entering freshman is about 3.3 on a 4.0 scale....For recent freshman classes, the average ACT Composite score has been 25, with the middle 50th percentile of the class scoring between 22 and 26.

Note that they have rolling admissions, so you could apply this fall and know if you are in by the end of 2008.

Mychances.net is not giving you very good advice, as, despite what they told you, you have better chances at Eckerd than at UMCP.

do i have a shot at university of central florida

For University of Central Florida, see: Freshmen Profile

They do not give the midranges, so it is somewhat harder to assess your chances, however, for freshmen entering Fall 2007:
[ul]
[]Average ACT 26.1
[]Average H.S. GPA: 3.72
[li]47% of applicants accepted[/li][/ul]
Note also that this school has very few out-of-state students, only around 5%.
