Few good non-ivy league schools. Chances?

I don't know what i'm supposed to type in here, this is my first post, but i've been looking all around for a forum where I can let out my optimism on colleges and make the correct decision.

My ACT was a 29. I'm a white male from Ann Arbor. My parents both went to Michigan, as well as my grandparents, cousins, etc. My GPA is a 3.63, but last year, 4 of my 6 courses were AC/AP, and I go to a school that gets bonus points at U of M.

I'm wondering if it's a safe bet that I can get into Michigan. I'm worried that they will unweight my GPA, and ruin it. I had a bunch of B+ grades in AP/AC classes, and the guy at the college visit said that to figure out GPA, you take away pluses and minuses, and get rid of grade boosts, and that curriculum was an entirely different factor.

Other colleges I would like to go to, but likely can't afford the private schools on this list.

REACH:
Northwestern
Duke
Stanford

MID:
Michigan
Cal-Berkley
USC
North Carolina
Illinois
Florida
Virginia
Boston College
Wisconsin
UCLA

BC, VA, UCLA, USC, UCB are all reaches

I don't think that you have a chance at UNC either. GPA and ACT are much too low for an out of state applicant.

You need to consider more safeties. What about Michigan State? Also look at some other Big Ten schools--Penn State, Indiana.

Oh, yeah didn't see UNC. Also Wisconsin...what's your class rank? Wisconsin generally accepts students from our school (a competitive public) with ACTs 28-30 and class rank in the top 20%.

My school doesn't offer class rank, but it's likely somewhere in the top 10-15%. I'm in a class of over 800, going to the largest high school in Michigan, and I see the same 60-80 kids in my AP/AC classes each year. I also got inducted in NHS, which is a 3.6 or higher, and only abouy 80-100 kids are in that.

I've been told that Wisconsin is basically the same as Michigan, and that Madison is Ann Arbor just with a capitol building. Any truth to this? I'm not looking hard at them yet, because if they are the same, and one's 20,000+ and one's 10,000, it doesn't make sense to go to the expensive one, right?

About UNC - I read on other threads about people getting denied from UNC, yet accepted into schools like Cornell, Brown, Penn. Is it really that selective? I'd love to go there. But I also read that 82% of the students they accept have to be from in state off their website, which REALLY hurts my chances. Comments?

my friend got accepted to UNC from OOS with a 31.
my other friend got rejected with a 28.
i think it has a lot to do with interest/ECs/personal qualities.

A2Wolves6:

UCLA: Reach (out of state)
UCB: Reach (out of state)

"I also got inducted in NHS, which is a 3.6 or higher, and only abouy 80-100 kids are in that."

dang dude...at my high school your GPA must be 3.9 or higher to be inducted...and that includes about top 15-20% of my class of 500...frigging unfair...

if you pull up your ACT to 30 or higher, i think you will definitely increase your chances...

yea some of your matches are definitely reaches just because you're out-of-state applicant.

but if you show passion and diversity in your ECs and essays, you have a chance at all those schools...though it's gona be difficult.

a2wolves6- that's a pretty good comparison. They both have state streets too! Anyway, this is a discussion i've had for a few years. I went to Wisconsin over michigan (out of state) because I felt for my political science major it was silly to spend more. BUT, kids from Wisconsin DO go to Michigan and kids from Michigan DO go to Wisconsin. Why? Well, many of the Wisconsin kids who go to michigan are from rich areas of milwaukee which have really good schools. Therefore, a) they can afford Michigan and b) a lot of their classmates go to Madison, so they want a change of scene. The same goes for Michigan students, many are from the burbs of Det. and the ann arbor area. They have the money, the grades, and wanted to get away from I guess the 10-20% of their classes going to Ann Arbor. HOWEVER, I always thought those were both bad reasons to go to another state school, simply because the money factor and that the schools are large enough to have your own niche.

btw, you're going to get into Michigan in state. I had friends OUT OF STATE, with 3.6/28s getting in. Just apply early.

kriegz- where is your school?

Whew... it's nice to know that I can get into UMich... i'm applying early.

So here's a new list... criticize please! I added some Ivy schools at others advice.

MAJOR REACH:
Northwestern
Duke
Stanford
Rice
Notre Dame

REACH:
Brown
Cornell
Penn
Cal-Berkley
USC
North Carolina
UCLA
Virginia
Boston College

MID:
Michigan
Illinois
Florida
Wisconsin

SAFETY:
Texas
Maryland
Miami (FL)
Miami (OH)
Minnesota
Pittsburgh

It's a long list... anyone want to help me eliminate schools? I'd like to get 4-6 to apply to.

almost all of the schools you have in the Reach category are as selective as your Major Reach.

And Texas and Florida have about the same selectivity out of state so i wouldnt count on Austin being a safety. You need more actual safeties like Michigan State.

Is that 3.63 unweighted or weighted?

3.63 is weighted, but not to the extent that others have commented on here. I get .33 of a boost each course, makes my grade from a A- to an A. So basically, I have an A- average, which I don't think is so bad

What's your UMich GPA?

MAJOR REACH:
Penn
Duke
Stanford
Northwestern
Brown
Cornell
Rice
Notre Dame

REACH:
Cal-Berkley
Virginia
Georgetown
UCLA
North Carolina
USC
Boston College

MID:
Michigan (in state)
Wisconsin
Illinois
Florida
Texas
Maryland
Miami (FL)
Miami (OH)
Minnesota
Pittsburgh

SAFETY:
Michigan State
Western Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Central Michigan
Grand Valley State

UMich GPA - you mean w/o the grade boosts, w/o the pluses and minuses and only 5 core classes (Math, Science, English, Foreigh Language, Social Studies) and only 10th and 11th? It's a poor 3.3 :-(

But... I had in that span 6 classes, one whole semester, in which I had a + in an AC class. So my B+ in AP History is being counted as a 3, when essentially it's a 3.66. I don't know if they will take that into consideration or not.

just apply everywhere man, but i really think you can take out most of your matches and reaches and just keep michigan in there, since its a great school

i know how it feels. i'm applying to umich as my first choice and all my 'B's were +s, i'm not really sure whether or not they take that into consideration though. your GPA will hurt you, but everything else looks good, esp all that legacy. i'd say umich is a slight reach for you, just remember to apply as early as possible. good luck.
