My kid is a direct admit to Kelley. Here is list of classes: coll-c 105, bus-A-100, Bus-k201, Math -S 118, Bus T 134, bicycling.

What do you think?

Thanks!

I don’t want you and your kid to rethink everything at this point, but since you asked, I’ll give feedback as a parent of a Kelley student beginning her sophomore year :). 12 hours seems a bit light. It’s probably fine if he/she is coming in with lots of credits and requirements already filled. Otherwise, can you add Kelley Compass I (T175) for 1.5 hours? If your kid is taking honors finite (Math-S 118) then I assume kid is in Hutton Honors. I highly recommend K204 (honors) over K201 - smaller classes and a pretty incredible real-world group project.

Maybe someone with more knowledge will comment about MATH-S 118 (honors finite) vs MATH-M 118. My daughter doesn’t know anyone who took S118. The grade distribution for S118 looks much better than M118, which is a positive. But I will give the same warning that others on the IU CC forum have given - Finite is tough. My daughter was strong in math in HS, all honors and 5 on BC Calc. She struggled in finite. She did end up with a B+ but she had to work her butt off to pull herself out of a midterm hole, and she is not a slacker. If S118 is even harder than M118 then I would recommend against it. I just don’t know if S118 is actually harder than M118…

Otherwise, the schedule looks like a great combo of technical vs writing, business vs GenEd with some fun sprinkled in.

I second what stbemtpynest said about honors/direct admit students taking K204. Your kid will get way more out of that class than K201. The skills you learn in K204 you will use throughout your Kelley years. Also, the class meets only twice a week in small classrooms, compared to K201 having the giant lecture class and meeting three times per week total.

I don’t see much value in taking S118. This class was offered only one time in the last four semesters at IUB. So, out of about 2000 freshmen and sophomores in Hutton that could have taken S118, only about 70 actually took the class. There are much less risky ways to fulfill the finite math requirement (for example, m118, community college transfer). Finite can be very difficult for students who are very good in other types of math. Also, notice that S118 is a four-credit class. A bad grade in a four credit class your first semester will put your gpa in a big hole, especially if you are looking at joining Kelley honors, which requires a 3.7 minimum gpa at the end of the freshman year to apply. Kelley students need to keep their gpa as high as possible prior to Icore, as Icore and the rest of the Kelley upper levels are very tough grading classes, usually where the average gpa per class is about 2.9-3.1. You need a big buffer first two years at IUB in order to lessen the hit to gpa that usually occurs the last two years. I don’t think 12 credits is too few, but I think it would be wise to take K204 instead of S118, and to add one of the one credit Kelley classes to the Fall semester to reach full-time status.
