I'm a sophomore in college and there are a couple (not well known) economic consulting firms I'm looking at applying to for a summer internship. Obviously I would not have a chance with the bigger firms. Anyway, I have interned before (at my senator's office the previous summer and also worked at a lab) but I don't have experience programming in SAS, R, STATA or anything like that (but I know how to program in C++).

These firms are probably looking for people with statistical programming experience and as of yet I don't have that. However, should I just send a cover letter and resume and just see what happens? I found an old posting for internship positions for one of the firms and they really wanted people which graduate level economic coursework, so I'm wondering if it would be even worth it. But at the same time I know that if I do get accepted, I'm not gonna be doing anything major anyway, considering I really don't have any specific skills as of yet. But I could easily learn R, STATA, or SAS considering I already know C++ and I know how to use Excel.

Thanks!
