I’m doing a research project that involved Orientation Programs from around the nation and was wondering if a current ASU student could help me out by possibly providing me with a schedule/overview of what goes on at ASU Orientation? Possibly what events that freshman/transfer go through. I know academic advising is an integral part but any other welcome events or activities that goes on would be helpful!

Orientation is an event meant to be attended by you and one of your parents. I know it looks much more intimidating because of the cost associated with bringing someone, but there is a lot of information presented to the parents and the students separately.

Basically, you get there around 8am, they check you in, you take your picture for your ID and then they present a welcome speech. Once the speech is done, you and your parents split up, you go to meet with your college and your parents sit in on a lecture about safety. All of the parent sessions are geared to convince your parents that ASU really is the school that they should want their child at. In your session, the colleges talk about what kind of classes are offered and what classes you’re most likely going to take. After that, you go and meet in smaller groups with an adviser. The advisers help you formulate a schedule for the fall. You then put your schedule in the computer and print it out. After that is lunch, when you’re reunited with your parents.

After lunch, you’re once again separated from your parents and you go talk with the SOLs (Student Orientation Leaders) about what college is really like. You play get to know you games and have the opportunity to ask any question you’d like. Once that session is done, you’re reunited with your parents and they have a closing lecture. In the end lecture, they attempt to teach you the fight song and the alma mater, but they also talk a lot about school spirit.

Anyways, that’s about all I remember, even though my orientation was only a year ago! If you have any questions, just ask. (:
