I would like to know more about the Sun Devil Marching Band. Any current or past members here? I would mainly like to know why you like or dislike the band, what is the best part of being in the band, has it/was it all worth it, and just in general any experiences or stories about the band. Thanks!

I’m a current member of the SDMB. I love it. I debated not joining marching band in college because my high school band was small, but the SDMB fulfills every dream I ever had about marching in college. Everyone in the band really does know each other, which offers a lot of family if you’re far from home. It also really helps having a smaller group of people that you know when you’re taking classes at the nation’s largest university.

The SDMB has a ton of tradition, and I think it’s actually really cool that I do know the words to the fight song and alma mater. There’s also nothing quite like the first run of the pregame show at the opening football game. It’s awesome to see new freshmen come in every year and experience the same awesome feeling that I did as a freshman. It’s nice too, that even though pregame looks roughly the same every year, it’s different every time you run it. We also learn about 4-5 halftime shows per season, which keeps everyone on their toes musically and visually. There isn’t any time to become bored.

Band camp sucks. I’m not going to try and make it better than it is, but it is absolutely worth it. It may be 110 outside and we may be practicing for 8 hours a day, but the sleep you get during those awkward two weeks is the best sleep of your life. You also learn to appreciate cold showers. It is amazing though, to see what 400 people have the ability to learn in just two short weeks.

If nothing else, FREE FOOTBALL TICKETS! (:

Our family went out to Tempe last October - half to visit Barrett and half to check out the SDMB. Both were awesome. We went to a band practice - our son was awestruck. It’s a tremendous band program, and it also has an in-town connection to The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps.
