At the Yale vs Cornell basketball game....

Thanks pigs. I am not sorry about offending anyone because I honestly don’t care if people were offended. I do not consider Northwestern to be prestigious. It is just like a UT-Austin or Berkley. A good school but not prestigious enough to boast. If you disagree that is your opinion, but the school I attend has no bearing on my opinion. Just because someone goes to Yale it doesn’t mean they are arrogant because they do not view another school as prestigious.

If anything the people on this thread are implicitlly acknowledging their view that Yale is superior by their allegations of arrogance. If I went to the University of Texas and said Northwestern were not prestigious I doubt anyone would have called me arrogant. The fact that people are so indignant is emblematic of the prestige hierarchy of schools, regardless of whether that hierarchy is legitimate or not.

@ pigs: it’s Northwestern, honey. Not “northeastern”. Just thought I’d point that out.

anyway… every time I hear that “work for us someday” cheer, it reminds me of Bring it On lol. Prob b/c I’m a cheerleader who is, sadly, obsessed with that movie =p But yea I really don’t get why saying that is “inappropriate” or whatever for Northwestern. I don’t care if the school isn’t as “prestigious” as Yale. It’s not like they were serious. It was all in good fun. People can say loads of crap at games and most of it has no merit at all. So don’t take it seriously. Anyway, being born a Chicagoan, I can tell you that in Chi, Northwestern is a big deal. You may not think so and that’s fine. I really don’t care. At the same time, what do you gain from putting it down as an institution? Yes, it’s not as “prestigious” as Yale, but who here argued that it was? If they want to think that they’re the shizz, let them. I think everybody thinks that they go to the best school, so how can they all be wrong?

The toes of ivy-rejects are delicate. We ought to not step on them.

:(

Oh my gosh pigs. I just laughed out loud :)

ooops, I mixed up northeastern with northwestern. They should also make a southwestern.

[Associated Content Mobile](http://mobile.associatedcontent.com/article/233742/ever_wonder_what_cars_the_richest_people.html)

^^^I bet those people have more than one car.

At the same time very wealthy people do not think Mercedes is the car to have either. Hence grasshopper still has a lot to learn.

Now you guys are just being flies. -_-

Have any of you ever read The Millionaire Next Door? It talks about how many wealthy people live below their means…which is how they got wealthy in the first place. Success didn’t change their thrifty ways, and they live in modest homes, drive modest cars, etc. It’s a nice corrective to the current idea that one should show off one’s wealth.

Yes, thank you for telling me about my favorite book. I read that in 5th grade.

There are two:
[Southwestern University (TX)](http://www.southwestern.edu/)
[Southwestern College (CA)](<a href=“Southwestern College : Chula Vista, California”>http://www.swccd.edu/)

and a Southeastern:
[Southeastern University (FL)](http://www.seuniversity.edu/)

as well as two other Northwesterns:
[Northwestern College (MN)](http://www.nwc.edu/)
[Northwestern College (IA)](http://www.nwciowa.edu/)

“The toes of ivy-rejects are delicate. We ought to not step on them.”

did someone say arrogance?

i’m from cali and i knew about northwestern before i even entered high school. i have to agree that it’s not as prestigious as yale, but that doesn’t mean it’s not prestigious, because yale is near the top. i would be very happy going to northwestern (granted, i applied for a music/engineering dual degree and northwestern’s music is top-notch) and i’m not an ivy-reject…although i suppose you guys don’t consider dartmouth an ivy either (only ivy i’ve heard from so far haha, likely letter).

you guys have to realize there’s a lot of regional stuff going into the considerations. Dbate, people at my high school would scoff at your ranking of berkeley and ucla as some of the most prestigious colleges. there is NO prestige in getting into berkeley and ucla here, nobody gives a flying f about it because 30-40 people go to EACH of them every year from my school. key word: go. who knows how many people are accepted

that’s not to say they’re bad schools.

oh and by the way, bill gates could pretty much buy anything he wants. but does he? no, actually he really doesn’t display his wealth very much, other than through philanthropic projects.

The level of difficulty in getting admitted to a school does not determine whether or not it is prestigious. I don’t consider Yale that difficult to get into, but that doesn’t mean it is not prestigious. Moreover, just because Berkley is easy to get into does not mean it is not prestigious–especially on the graduate school level. Berkley has better faculty and research than many universities have and is consistently well regarded internationally.

Dbate, Berkeley was named for the philosopher for whom Yale’s Berkeley College is named. It’s spelled “Berkeley.”

Oh well, internet spellings don’t matter.

the reputation of those schools is low at my school because they are easy to get into. i know that doesn’t translate to how employers view berkeley and ucla, but you could say the same thing about northwestern. just because you and other people think northwestern isn’t prestigious, employers could view it just as favorably. i’d trust the elders who posted before me to determine that…

What about that did you find funny?

WOAH. WHAT?! Are you serious here?? Yale with it’s 5% (ish) acceptance rate, the Yale that rejects thousands of qualified applicants each YEAR?! …Are we talking about the same school here??

Just because you got into an Ivy league does NOT give you the right to say stuff like that and be arrogant about it. For all we know, the adcoms had a good day when they read your app.

First of all the acceptance rate is no where near 5 percent. Even last year when I got in RD the acceptance rate was 5.4%, but combined with the early apps it was 7.5ish so you are overestimating.

Moreover, I know several people who got into Yale. In fact when I was at nats last year it seemed like they were just handing out acceptances from all the people who were going. Getting into Yale just takes good grades, good tests scores, good ECs, and good essays. If you have that combo I don’t see any reason you wouldn’t be accepted and, assuming someone had those, it would not be that difficult.

I don’t see why not. I also doubt Ivy league schools arbitrary make decisions. I estimated my odds of getting into Ivies, realized I had a higher chance at getting into Yale and put more effort into my Yale app. So surprise, surprise I was admitted to Yale. There is no arrogance in that statement. If you put alot of effort into school and your application I don’t see why you wouldn’t be admitted, so in that regard there is no difficulty. It is the same as saying a test isn’t really difficult if you study.

I thought it was funny that she called them Ivy league rejects. Which was ironic considering some of them went to Ivy league schools including Yale.
