Atheists anyone?

Atheist bro here

I actually wrote one of my college essays about how modern religions are in fact no different from the myths of ages past. Yet we treat them completely differently

^Lol, I wrote a paper exactly like this a pretty long time ago. It's amusing how practically nobody ever realizes this. People are like "Bah! Zeus! Hah!" and then "God MUST exist!!!!!!!!11!11" Ummm... lol.

Oh, and, I have almost always been [if i MUST be labeled! ahah] mostly an agnostic half-way theist. Lol. Surely there's a wikipedia page about that! Lololol. I side with agnostics on the whole "existence of a god [or gods] is unknowable and unable to be proven/disproven, etc," but personally I have always sort of leaned toward believing in God, however ludicrous it may seem [to me! even].

Lol, though, apparently everyone I know thinks I'm a Christian [perhaps.. because.. I usually just say I'm a Christian just 1) to see how terribly I'll get stereotyped by the person, and see if they're worth being friends with :] ahah and 2) because saying mostly agnostic half-way theist is too wordy and nobody knows what I mean and 3) I could care less either way, so why not just say I'm a Christian when it benefits me? haha.
The end.

edit - and OH how I hate organized religion! Lol.

I feel more intelligent people are Atheists, and that religion is going to die out one day.

I mean seriously, look at the numbers declining for religion. Some say it won't ever die out, and I guess completely it won't, but I don't think religion is going to be a big part of peoples lives in years later.

Atheists do better on the SAT.

I'm more of a agnostic, and yes I agree that religion can be a bit absurd- but it's not completely useless. Religion gives many a false sense of hope and righteousness, things that keep the world from doing itself in.

I used to be devoutly Catholic, now I am an Agnostic Wiccan.

The only reason I cannot be Atheist is actually because of something I learned while I attended Catholic school- If an object can only move when a force acts on it, then what was the original force?

For me, until that question is answered, I cannot be Atheist.

Atheist. Although my (also atheist) mom tells coworkers that she's Buddhist/etc. so that she doesn't get strange questions or people trying to convert her... XD

I suspect if atheism was widely organized like religion it wouldn't be so.

Yea, I'm exactly like INVENIAMVIAM, I would like to see proof of God, but I personally believe in God and that I hate how people think that their religion is "right" and that everyone must do exactly as the religion says in order to be "right". Going to church every single week does not exactly make you closer to God. Wars are always caused by religion and politics is always muddled by religion. I'm not gonna rant about how religion is the ultimate evil, but as Karl Marx once said, "Religion is the opium of the people".

Well, you can be athiest and believe in science. That's a deist correct?

Yeah, my mom's a devout religious person. She likes to do all sort of things that I look like "Why would you do that for?" and then on Sunday it cancels out because she goes to church! She also tells me of many stories of people getting into shoddy relationships, constantly gossiping, and even getting murdered in church. And being an African-American, who are like THE most overtly religious people one could possibly ever meet, I couldn't help but feel like I was going to hell being surrounded by them. I LOVE the world, yet that's a sin. When I was a kid fixing computers I didn't see how praying over my food would make it taste any better :). Not to mention the fact that the divorce rate hovers above 60% in such a religious society.

I think the fact that religion has been pushed so much on me as a child is why I'm so bitter at religious people.

I'm an atheist, mainly because I've realized that religion is the most b.s story I've ever heard: there is an invisible man somewhere in the sky who watches everything you do every second of every minute of every day. And whenever you make an accomplishment, it was because of him, and when you make a mistake, it's your own evil fault. He also has a list of 10 things he doesn't want you to do and if you do any of them, he will send you to this place full of fire, torture, and burning, where you will suffer for all eternity.... OH, and he loves you. -- I don't get how anyone can believe something like this can be true.

Atheists assume an infinite universe with no beginning.

[/Quote]

No, they don't...

^ You do realize there are more religions than simply Christianity (which is the religion you described) out there?

I think it irritates me when people automatically assume that religion = Christianity. People, there are other religions out there!

Sorry, mini-rant.

I'm an agnostic/atheist/transcendentalist. I was a christian, until I realized how many of their core beliefs I was not subscribing to, especially concerning the afterlife. I then realized that my whole "create own religion" thing completely defeats the purpose of having one at all, as they are supposed to be "ordained by God" apparently. I'm not really explaining this right...

Well, i guess i wasn't really mocking religion, I was mocking the chances of the existence of god. There are religions out there w/ no god - Buddhism, Shinto (I think?), which I have no problem with. Christianity and Islam are what I really detest.

I'm a Catholic with some Buddhist tendancies.

I've gone to religious school all my life, and I was pretty much agnostic (mostly driven by awful religion teachers)until this year, when I read C.S. Lewis and just sort of got it again, like I used to when I was a little kid.

I like being spiritual, but I don't subscribe to the majority of the Church's doctrine on social issues. The Church is fine with disagreement on doctrine, so I don't feel bad.

I definitely understand why people are atheists, but right now I'm happier if I believe in God.

(If anyone wants to discuss religion further, I have pretty extensive knowledge about world religions in addition to Christianity. I have an extremely deep knowledge of the Catholic church and am always happy to talk about what they believe/do in an objective way.)

i am technically catholic but my beliefs are more in line with judaism in that i believe in god but not a literal heaven/hell. i also dont participate in religious services.

I'm an atheist/agnostic and I go to a private Catholic school. Mandatory religion classes only make me doubt God more. Right now, we are learning about Moses and the fire bush.
Can anyone explain to me how the fire bush talked to him?

"I think it irritates me when people automatically assume that religion = Christianity. People, there are other religions out there!"

I think of Hinduisim when I think of religion coz they have this thing where they worship stone idols. It's so ridiculous. Christainity is almost bearable but Hinduisim is just plain weird with the huge metal and stone idols decked in extravagant clothes to which everyone bows and drops to their knees in worship. I mean, they realize that these stone idols of gods are just carved rocks right?

Well, marijuana has been around for thousands of years...xD!

^I don't know, there's something kind of reassuring about the Hindu rituals (the name I can't remember right now, I'm kicking myself). Everything has a meaning (the milk and the honey and the fire), and the statues are more like personifications of the gods than they are the gods themselves.

It's almost like "if we do everything exactly right, we will be ok". Which is a mindset I can relate to.

"Well, you can be atheist and believe in science. That's a deist correct?"

A deist believes in God who does not watch over people's every action. (The opposite of personal God present in Christianity, Islam etc)

I meant the marijuana comment to explain the burning bush...haha.
