So I walked through Wellesley's athletic facilities and was pretty disappointed. Wellesley is such an amazing school with so many amazing facilities. Granted, this definitely won't make or break any decision I make, but I'm just curious. I'm a bit of a gym rat and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how working out in their gym is. Is it overly busy? Is it as dingy as it looks? Do people regularly work out in there?

Gym popularity has increased over the years; this semester it has been particularly popular imo. I wouldn’t say it is overly busy though. You might have to wait a few minutes if you really really want that treadmill and can’t go on a stationary bike or elliptical for a bit first, but all in all it’s a pretty good flow of people through the cardio corner.

The cycling area was just put in last semester, so they definitely are trying to improve the facilities. While some people do regularly work out there, it is mostly people on athletics teams for the majority of the year. However, PERA has been trying to increase attendance of non-athletics people, and they’ve done good job of it. They hold more “fun” events which encourage people to exercise and things like that (pool parties, etc). [Not to say that Wellesley is full of people who don’t exercise but for a lot of students academics are a higher priority. Granted I think Wellesley has one of the thinnest student bodies I’ve seen…though I do realize there’s a difference between thin, healthy, and fit.]

Some residence halls also have exercise areas (generally a few cardio machines) and some people find those areas more convenient for them than the sports center. There are also PE classes (it’s required that you take a year total of PE) and aerobics classes that take place all throughout the day.

thank you!
is there a weight room that is accessible to students not on athletic teams?

Yes. It’s actually pretty decent compared to those of Division 1 schools – all the basic equipment and weights are there. We just don’t have heavier free weights (I think 30 or 40 is our heaviest) and non-athletes don’t have access to a barbell <– that is in the athletes-only weight room.

I love the weight room! the machines are really easy to use and super accessible:)
Some aspects of the sports centre you may not have seen like the studios - for dance classes, aerobics, PE (like yoga, zumba, pilates) etc - the pool (has a diving area as well), and things like the squash courts…
