where do you live, jake? I live in Ohio and everyone has heard of it and thinks it's great.

I'm going to NYU as well, & it does irk me a little, but not much. I know that in the city almost everyone (including future employers) are very impressed by the prestige of NYU. A lot of my friend's parents & such are from a time when NYU was considered a not so great commuter school, so I know they don't quite understand. I think saying Stern is not going to help you at all though, because honestly who in the world (minus those who majored/are majoring in Business themselves) knows all the individual schools of business amongst colleges? I find that when I say NYU, often people ask me what I'm studying or, if they're knowledgable, which school I'm in & I tell them Tisch and they are thoroughly impressed. Anyway, just my two cents....

Why would you refer to NYU as Stern? that alone would probably cause confusion in people who haven't been in the college application/college going phase in a while.

And trust me, no one thinks NYU is a NY state school. That's just foolish.

ha, i thought it was

Why does it matter if your barber has heard of your college? I bet that you aren't familiar with barbering schools/programs, and I doubt that your barber cares as long as you pay and tip.

I don't care if my barber has heard of my school -- in fact, I'd rather get that than, "oh, you pretentious snot, you go to an Ivy League school."

I remember talking to a football player.
me- "im going out to visit colleges in Chicago"
him- which ones?
me- University of Chicago
him- (confused stare)
me- and Northwestern
him- Northwestern is a really good school!

I'm in IL, and whenever someone says University of Chicago everyone thinks University of Illinois-Chicago. It's always an awkward conversation.
"I'm going to visit U of C"
"UIC?"
"No, U of C"
"UIC?"
"Univeristy of Chicago"
"University of Illinois-Chicago?"

And then a lot of people going to Northeastern University are subject to people thinking they're attending Northeastern Illinois University.

I say Fordham, they say Florida.
NO no no.
Silly people.

FYI...I assume you are male...but you should know that there are two Stern Colleges in NYC. The other is Stern College for Women, part of Yeshiva University. It's also a very good school, but very different from Stern at NYU. So..within a good portion of the population in NYC, you might get some strange stares if you just say you are attending Stern!

If you don't want to just say "NYU"...you might want to attach "NYU" to the name when you say "Stern".

Hardly anyone on the west coast knows anything about Emory. Even when I say that my D is going to school in Atlanta I get blank stares, like they don't even know where Atlanta is.

im going to Duke next year, and although most people know that its a good school, one of my managers at CVS didnt. Convo:

Manager: So where you going to school?
Me: Duke
Manager: um... okay. Where's that?
Me: North Carolina

You would think he would at least know about Duke Basketball

i used to think nyu was a suny and guess where i live: long island...then someone hit me and i was like oooo...but my dad is the long islander who thinks binghamton is the hardest school to get into that its on the ranks of ivys and hes not even talking about there honors section

just today after i had responded to this thread, i went out with a cardinal red shirt with the STafnord "S" on it.

Guy: "what's that S for?".
Me:"stanford"
Guy:"stanford, huh. that's it? eh you could've done better."
me:"haha"

probably the best reaction i've ever gotten from anyone. no awkward praise but also no absence of recognition, and i genuinely laughed. i hate when i have to do that fake laugh when people say something like "oh you're becoming a stanford doctor. great i'll need some surgery in a few years, so hook me up" or something like that.

Haha, that's a good reaction. I've gotten that about Brown, but people weren't being sarcastic...! Then again, those were University of Chicago people... (lots of love for all my friends at UC but they have such a superiority complex!)

this is exactly why i didn't want to go to uc davis

people outside of new england don't normally know of where tufts is. somebody from the west coast asked me if it was a private high school.

If I asked someone where they were going to college and they just replied with "Stern", I wouldn't know what the hell they were talking about, either. It's bad enough that you expect everyone else to have memorized the US News rankings so not only can they recognize the name of your prestigious university, but they 'll also know exactly how prestigious it is...you expect them to have all the universities' sub-schools' names memorized as well? Outside of this site, most people don't really give a damn.

Whenever people ask me where I'm going to school (RISD, Rhode Island School of Design) they always end up talking about Project Runway. Ok, I'm not anti-Project Runway, but it irritates me that people just assume that I'm going into fashion design.

I guess I don't really respect fashion design majors... there are so many people trying to become the next Marc Jacobs that it completely lowers the art form. I'm from the south, so I usually say that I'm going to "some school up in Rhode Island." I know it's silly, but I wish that everyone knew how difficult it was to get into RISD. I want to say... yeah, I'm going to the best art school in the country, instead of receiving blank stares and questions about "what I'm going to do with my art degree."

ive noticed that people on the west coast, like parents and students, are usually ignorant of colleges in the midwest or east coast besides the Ivies. When i told some people from california that i had a friend going to Northwestern, they were like ***?? in contrast, i think people on the east coast are more cognizant of colleges on the west coast, like the UC system, etc

grim67 -- congrats on RISD -- people in the art/design world know what a big deal it is, and that's what really counts.
