That's why you need to xerox the college rankings and carry about 10 everywhere you go.

"Oh you go to Penn State"

BAM you slap them in the face with the college rankings

I go to Tufts, and live in Texas where almost nobody has heard of it. I can definately relate to everyone on this thread. It's good to know I'm not the only one:-)

About the Panoma thing...well...I don't now where you live, but there's a Panola Junior College fairly close to my town that two kids in my class are going to. I could definitely understand if anyone around here mixed the two up since they sound so similar, but it could be a totally different thing for your area.

my favorite is upenn's "not penn state" facebook group.
i think you could go just about anywhere and there would be someone who didn't recognize your school - some are more recognizable than others, but telling stories about this stuff is always funny to me. My bro went to RPI and my friends would always be like "where's he go again? RIP?"
we have a lot of friends who are failing recent immigrants, so they ask me, "where are you going again?"
"yale"
"harvard?"
"no, no, i decided on yale"
"harvard? that's a great university"
"no, yale. it's a school in connecticut."
"yell? what a funny name for a college"
"yale, yay-el. i'll buy you a shotglass"
"oh, you're such a sweet girl. i wish you would've gone to stanford. it's so close to home."

WashU...very few people I've talked to, except highly educated people and employers, have heard of it. I tell them I go to WashU, and they say, "Oh, okay...is that near Seattle?"

Often times, word of mouth gets the name messed up, so I end up with people asking me these sorts of questions:
"So, I hear you're going to U of Washington...do you like it?"
"How's Washington and Jefferson going?"
"I hear you're going to Washington and Lee."
"I'm sure you're be happy at WashU, being that it's right in DC...lots of tourism there!"
"How is George Washington U going?"
"How is Washington State going?"
"How is Central/Eastern/Western Washington?"

And my personal favorite:
"Washington University in St. Louis...where in Washington is St. Louis?"

I don't think anybody should care what the average Joe thinks.

i like the "Washington University in St. Louis...where in Washington is St. Louis?" one 2....i laughed so hard

This is good for you people. You get a whole section to talk crap to everyone about where you go to school and it makes you all feel like you're helping out the less fortunate by explaining things to them. Someone make a new topic called "I'm a snobby freshman and I want everyone to know I'm smarter than they are because they've never heard of my bullsh it little 1500 kid school."

no, thx, that is not what they are doing....its funny....

imagine going to Bob Jones University- the initials are just to funny

i do'nt think there's anythign wrong in peope recognizing if you go to a good school or not...you worked hard to get there, why not be recognized for that? just don't go out of your way, by boasting, to get the compliment or recognition

No but there is something seriously wrong with someone who gets upset that a random person doesn't worship them for getting into a "great" school. There is an obvious self esteem/validation issue there.

Also citygirlsmom: LOL awesome

So what school do you go to?
Washington and Lee University
Ahh great school, right in DC right?
Umm no not exactly
So you're going all the way to the West Coast?
No it's in Virginia
I thought Washington U St. Louis was in Missouri?
It is, I'm not going to Wash U St Louis, my school is in Virginia
Oh so by DC then?
No Southwestern Virginia
Oh William and Mary, I thought you said something about Washington?
No, and its not UVA either, its Washington and Lee

Sadly, they do last that long

Hi. Welcome to CC you must be new here.

I go to Bryn Mawr, which almost no one here in the South has ever heard of/can't pronounce to save their lives. Plus it's a women's college, so when that comes out, all sorts of stereotypes start flying. And then when I say I'm an Archaeology major, they're usually so confused they just walk away.

Want to Know why, Because in the real world, the name means Nothing, Its your real world experience that matters. The experience also needs to be for that job. To the guy who went for a Interview at CVS, you going to your big Name school has nothing to do with the Manager of CVS, It does not impress him if you went to Stanford, because Stanford is not going to make you any faster at stocking shelves or being a cashier, In that case it is irrelevant. Belive it or not he would have been much more impressed if you had 5 years of experience at wallgreens. The reason for this is, the name of your school means nothing to him.

If the name of a school means something to an employer, than believe me they will know.

I have personally never experience what you guys are talking about. Everybody who ever asks me what school Im going to I say UB, They say wow how do you deal with the snow. Or you are crazy because its so Cold.

I know my school may not be ranked up there with some of you folks, But to me its great and I love it. Maybe this is why people always know it. Maybe there aren't as many smart people like you guys, who deserve to go to Big name schools and the Majority of People our age go to Schools like Mine which are maybe a little above average.

Who CARES if people have heard of your school or not?! I can't believe you guys are such snobs that you feel personally offended that you might have to explain your school to someone. If someone hasn't heard of my school or thinks it is a state school or gets it confused with another school, I don't mind at all! I just correct them and then move on to another subject.

The thought of being exasperated that the CVS guy doesn't know your school is mind blowing. Or your hairdresser--I agree with Northstarmom. Why should they know? Their job is cutting your hair, and I bet you don't know the location of every Aveda Institute around the country.

To the NYU guy---get a life! Most people don't have time to pour over business school rankings and better yet, they wouldn't if they did have time. I am happy that going to Stern clearly does so much for your ego, but please be reminded your fab degree will do nothing for you if you continue to look down upon those not in the Stern-Wharton realm with such obvious disgust.

You can't see how it could be irritating that someone can't remember what school you're going to after being corrected several times?

I don't care that people don't know anything about Tech's BME program (why would they?) and can't figure out why I'd turn down A&M's BME for theirs. I find it funny when people get confused over the "LA Tech" thing on Facebook. It's just plain irritating, though, when someone tries to argue with me over whether I applied to LSU (or said I was going there), where my school's located, and even what its mascot and colors are.

La Tech's only two and a half hours away from my town for goodness sake. It shouldn't be that difficult for people that know me well to remember.

"You can't see how it could be irritating that someone can't remember what school you're going to after being corrected several times?"

That is not what this thread is about at all...

I love how some people here have the audacity to claim they are above this topic. Most people here worked quite hard to get into their dream school, and it is not that hard to imagine how it may be frustrating to said person when other people have no idea where, say, WashU is located. Coming from Boston and going to Emory, I do share this frustration. This doesn't mean I'm going to be some arrogant fool and tell every1 I meet, who have yet to hear of Emory, that Emory is ranked higher than BC/Tufts, but I do have the right to vent on this website.

People confusing my school with another is on topic enough for this thread. Just like Ponoma getting confused with a CC or the ones that have to explain what state Tufts is in or whatever.

I could throw a hissy fit about how nobody knows how strong Tech's BME program is and how most folks on this site think only idiots attend schools ranked outside of the top 10, but I honestly don't care about that.
