I am hoping to attend Bama Bound next summer without either of my parents. Instead, I’d be accompanied by a dear friend/mentor who has served and a father figure in my life over the last several years. My question is, what information will I need to get from a parent? Is there anything a parent can provide for Bama Bound that I would be severely lacking?

Not really. Many kids attend BB without any parents. You’ll be fine. Just bring your health records, and be sure to have your necessary booster shots, TB test, and meningitis shot. You can get the meningitis shot at the health center if needed.

Awesome, thank you. I believe I just received an email about booster shots, so I will call up my doctor and get ahold of my immunization records. Thank you for your help!

Also, I couldn’t find dates for the next sessions of BB…when are they usually?

May through August.

You might want or need to take placement tests before you come to Bama Bound. Here’s the link: http://orientation.ua.edu/details/placement.html

I can’t think of anything you need a parent for. The medical forms can be sent in ahead of time. You also can send in your picture for your Action Card ahead of time. If you want parental advice on your schedule, you’ll have plenty of time to work on your schedule before Bama Bound so you can go with your desired schedule and some alternates. The only thing my daughter needed me for at BB was opening a credit union account, since she’s not 19. However, I’m sure we could have set that account up by mail if need be.

Yes, you can do Bama Bound without a parent. Most of the planning; like schedules and medical forms needs to be done in advance anyway. Come prepared with several viable alternate schedules.

What is Bama bound? Thanks!

Bama Bound is a comprehensive, personal orientation program aimed at connecting you with the academic culture, campus climate, and student community at The University of Alabama. Please use the information contained in these web pages to pave your way toward an amazing student experience at the Capstone.

In short, it is an opportunity for students to stay on campus and get registered for their first semester.

RE Placement tests: According to myBama, I’ve been placed into MATH 121/125. Do I need to take a placement test? From what I’m understanding, it looks optional, but I could be wrong. Also, I intend to score 4+ (3 worst case scenario) on the AP Stats exam this spring. Will that change my math placement?

I don’t think you would need a math placement test since you placed into calculus. Did you have AP credit for that?

I don’t think AP Stats would affect the calculus placement.

What is your intended major?

Found a little more explanation. http://math.ua.edu/undergraduate_program/course_information/web_advisor/math_advising.php

I do not have AP credit for Calculus. I took Pre-Calc last year as a junior and am taking AP Stats this year. My intended major is Theatre, on the Design/Tech track. My minor will be Political Science.

I seem to recall the math placement listed on myBama as the placement you could get without having to take the Math Placement test. As one can’t have a listed placement higher than MATH 121/125, you should be fine not taking the Math Placement Test. Those who’ve taken higher level math courses for college credit that transfer to UA can schedule their math courses based on those credits.

Many students attend Bama Bound aka Freshman Orientation without their parents. Your mentor sounds like a great person and should be fine attending the parent’s orientation if desired (there is an extra charge for parent orientation.) Make sure that you have your parent or legal guardian sign the appropriate paperwork beforehand if you are under 19 and you’ll be fine. Note that many people at UA will often say Parent rather than Parent/Guardian, but your mentor will be welcomed with open arms at Parent Orientation and the rest of your UA experience.

That is so wonderful to hear. This man has truly been more of a parent for me than anyone else in my life, and I’m so glad there will be a place for him at Bama Bound. Any idea on how much the charge is for the parent orientation? Thank you and Roll Tide!

Parent orientation should be around $75+ lodging costs for one parent/guardian/mentor and $50 for a second one unless prices go up.

Bama Bound costs less than $200 for a student unless prices have risen and includes one night in a dorm room.

Parents can lodge in the dorms…don’t know what the price for that is.

These were our costs for June 2012 BB. I stayed in the dorm for 2 nights and my son stayed an extra night

ORIENT HOUSING ADD NIGHT FR WB $24.00
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION FEE WB $120.00
PARENT ORIENTATION FEE WB $75.00
PARENT/FAMILY HOUSING OPT A WB $76.00

Thank you all so much for your help! Roll Tide!
