Attending college out of state

Hi! I was just wondering on how easy it would be for me to get a job in the software engineering field at some high company such as Cisco, Oracle, or Google if I accept my offer of admission and attend the University of Pittsburgh. I currently live in the state of California and wish to move back there after I get my Computer Science Bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. By studying in the east coast, would it be more difficult for me to get a job in the west coast? Thanks for all the help.

It’s always difficult to get jobs at these companies no matter where you are. It’s all about experience, not just where you went to school. A good internship perhaps. There is a Google office in Pittsburgh.

To echo @southeastmom it’s not your degree but what you’ve done with it. I would encourage you to get some high level internships or research experience every summer to boost your resume. I had a friend graduate from CS who is now working for Amazon, so high-level jobs are possible, but you need to put in a lot of effort outside of classes to make sure you stand out.

I’ll put in a third endorsement for making a strong effort to build excellent experiences. I live in Pgh, am familiar with the tech scene and would encourage you to research the very vibrant startup community in Pittsburgh, as well as the small, medium and larger tech companies that have presences in Pittsburgh, so that you can map out an approach to early internships. There are several former startups in the city that were acquired by the big boys like SAP and Oracle. I’ll leave the research to you, because it’s easy to find the companies - just Google your interests (and yes Google has a strong presence in the East End).
