Attending ND Summer Programs = Plus?

1) There is a Summer Track & Field Program offered at the same time as a Minority Actuarial Science Program I want to attend. But if attending the Track & Field Program would have any significant influence on admission to Notre Dame, I would drop the Actuarial Science program (which is my career aspiration) flat. Is it worth doing?

2) Here it comes... What are my chances at ND?

Hi. I attended a summer program at Notre Dame this past summer and was just admitted EA. First, I will say that admission to a ND summer program and also a summer program at any college is usually much easier (there are a few exceptions though). So admission to the program doesn't predict an acceptance letter. (But your program is athletic, so I guess this really doesn't apply)

I do however believe that attending a summer program does increase one's chance because it shows interest, which is pretty important at ND. How much of an increase-- I am not sure, but I would expect only slightly.

But you look like a very strong applicant and I think you will be admitted and I recommend applying Early Action too. Based on your stats I would say you can do whatever camp you want, because you are already look pretty strong.

First of all, congratulations on your achievements - you have a very strong profile. With those stats, especially having an ACT score of 32-34 and two SAT IIs in which you received perfect scores, you should also consider HYPSM (given that you are new to CC, I will spell them out: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT). My DD had a similar profile last year and was accepted to HYPS, Cornell and others. To answer your question, you will be a very viable candidate at ND next year. I would go for the actuarial science program, instead of the track and field program. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies so far. I have looked in to other colleges (such as Harvard, etc) but haven't found them to be a perfect fit like ND. Looking to stay near Michigan (but not in it save UMich), Chicago, or Washington DC. For some reason, I am choosing my colleges by where I want to live, and then selecting institutions.

Do ANY of the other summer programs offered at ND possibly offer any help to your area of interest to study in college? I am not knocking the Track and Field, but if you really want to participate in a program that is more academic, ND does offer some pretty interesting summer options. And, yes, I think that given your stats, you will probably not have much trouble being admitted, esp EA. If you can attend a summer program, I think it would enhance your app even more. And, I would certainly add a short note about the program and how it possibly benefitted you. Son was admitted EA in Fall of '05 with similar stats. He had attended one of the summer programs that previous summer and mentioned it in his app as well. I do think it helped! Good Luck!!

I was looking at the more academic summer programs at ND, actually. But it is a little too late now. Deadline for applications was March 1st.

Profile looks really good, you may not need it, but I'd say go with Track, maybe you can impress a coach.

There's an active Actuarial Science club at ND, and ND is recruited heavily for actuaries. There's no actuarial department, but the Math department can help you with class selection (double majoring in Business is good).
Personally, I'd think the actuarial seminar would be more distinctive and could give you some great contacts for later summer internships. (Think about it -- how many people go to track camps? How many to actuarial camps? Certainly gives you a different profile!) And I agree that your accomplishments make you a very strong candidate for ND and other top schools. What has moved ND to the top of your list?

you're an african-american with 2 perfect scores on the SAT. Not only will you be admitted to Notre Dame, you'll be admitted (possibly) with a scholarship. Apply EA, I would be absolutely shocked if you don't get admitted. PM me if you want, and good luck!

I don't think Notre Dame has scholarships?

Am I wrong?

No pure merit scholarships--the scholarships are all tied to Financial Aid. Therefore, if you do not require financial aid, you will not receive a "scholarship".

That's just what they tell people - you'd be surprised.

irish_hopeful--do you know something that we don't about pure merit scholarships at ND? I am fairly confident in my previous post!
