I hope to attend USNA for the class of 2021 and wanted an outside unbiased opinion on my stats and extracurriculars to see if anyone had another view.
Academics:
I have a 4.64 weighted and 3.90 unweighted GPA. PSAT 2014: 170 (yes, it’s awful) I have taken AP Calculus AB/BC (scored a 4 on both, B’s in class), AP Physics 1 and 2 (did not pass- but got A’s in the classes), AP Chemistry (A’s so far), and AP English Language (A’s so far).
Extracurriculars:
I played JV Field Hockey my Freshman and Sophomore years (my sophomore year I was captain) , and Varsity this past year (I am a Junior), member of the Marching Band at my high school (we were predicted to win Nationals this year) , member of the English, Spanish, Science, Math, and regular Honor Societies, member of my school’s Model UN, I have been awarded state recognition two years in a row for my musical accomplishments, and I am a member of a club field hockey team.
Volunteer: (I am pretty sure I do other volunteering that I cannot think of in this moment)
Coaching Science Olympiad and running events at the local, regional, and state levels and Peer Ministry at my local church.
What is your opinion on my ability to become appointed to the Naval Academy? If I am not ‘triple Q-ed’ what do I need to work on?
I should also note that if I took the CFA (candidate fitness assessment) right this moment I would not score well- but I am working on my weaknesses. Also, I scored somewhere in the 90’s on the ASVAB last year, I have only ever taken honors classes, and I plan on taking 4 AP classes next year.
Can you run faster than a 5:20 mile? (The best time you are allowed to record)
Can you do 50+ pushups in 2 mins?
Can you do 75 situps in 2 mins?
Can you do 10 pullups in 2 mins?
I could do all that , and I got an interview. Get ~30 on the ACT and that will be good.
If you can’t do all those, it doesn’t take long to be able to do it. I went from 50 pushups to 100 in a matter of a month.
@purpledog354 You are obviously good on academics and fitness. Start working on nominations. Get in good now, because it is competitive. Work on your interviewing skills, particularly if you are going to be able to handle giving them 8 years of your life minimum.
Thank you for your feedback so far @cappex !! My SAT is 1900 combined. Is that good for a well rounded student? Also when should I start applying for nominations, before or after the camp?
purpledog354,
The nominations (at least for my state) open in March, I would check with your Congressman/woman and Senators to see when their individual due dates are. From what I have noticed each state is different. I am also pretty sure that the process is longer than most because the interviews are in November (again, my state)
@purpledog354 since nominations are the only thing that could hold you back, start working on those immediately. You need to become close to the possible nominators
Obviously it could be better, but as of now it is in range. Since you’re a junior, you might as well take it and actually study for it a few more times. Also try the ACT.
