Needs more cowbell

cowbell? ( 10 char)

Wow, "Internet Search and Portal" and "Windows Media Player 10" are line items... talk about padding.

Dual core is nice, but you might not be impresed with the performance on the model you've spec'd. Your DDR2 memory is only rated at 533 Mhz and DDR2, while it has larger bandwidth, has higher latency (slower to access). The older DDR1 on a 400Mhz clock can often give better system response than DDR2 at 533 if it's lower-quality chips (which you can count on in a Dell). DDR2 starts to beat out DDR1 in performance once it hits 667 Mhz.

Also, I've never been impressed with the physical quality of Dell's laptops; I much prefer Toshiba -- and I think Toshiba is worth spending a few hundred dollars more... but that's me personally.

I'd consider looking at Pentium 4/M machines w/ HyperThreading and fast DDR1 (400Mhz) and see if you can't come up with a similar configuration; you might get better performance, though you wouldn't be able to brag about having a dual-core processor. Just something to think about.

EDIT:
To answer your real question, yes, it's fine... probably not a spectacular deal, but reasonable. It will certainly get you through any engineering coursework, but so will a PC built in the year 2000. Today's processing technology isn't really necessary for most applications, but it certainly helps if you plan to whip out a copy of Half-Life 2.

alright thanks alot

As wrprice said, it would be good enough for engineering coursework, and the highest settings of Half Life 2. But for maximum settings of Oblivion... that would be a different story.

so basically unless i play computer games iyo it would be good thanks alot

Sorry - "needs more cowbell" is a joke from Saturday Night Live . . .

If you buy from Dell, use the big coupons they offer like every other week. You could get $500 off $1599 and save more money.

Matlab won't run without version 3.5. ;)

No, your computer is fine, but don't go for the inspiron line of Dells...they break down alot. Go to the business site and get a latitude - better quality and support.
