I know you shouldn't select a college based on how the students dress, but D heard that the students at Elon dress up for class, nobody walks around in sweats, etc. We visited in March on Good Friday so there weren't many students on campus and we didn't get the real feel of the campus atmosphere and attire. While she likes to look nice, there are plenty of days where she prefers to roll out of bed, throw on yoga pants and a t-shirt, put the hair in a pony tail and go out without makeup. Will this be frowned upon at Elon? We also don't want the additional expense of a new wardrobe on top of tuition! Is this dressy-ness a regional thing? (We're from the midwest)

You will defnitely see A LOT of girls just walking around in yoga pants/t-shirts when going to class. Elon tends to get the stereotype of being super “preppy” but I disagree. Yes, there will be the guys that always wear button downs/khakis to class and the girls who get dressed up for their 8 a.m.'s but you will also see students in sweatpants/t-shirts going to class (I wore sweatpants religiously to my 8 a.m.'s as a freshman). The only time girls really get dressed up 100% of the time is if they are going to a party but in terms of everyday wear, she does not need to go buy a whole new wardrobe.

I checked with my daughter. She says she usually wears jeans and a decent top or sweater. Occasionally, sweatpants are fine, but most people don’t wear them every day. She’ll wear gym clothes if she’s going to the gym right after. She said when the weather is nice, girls usually wear dresses. Morning classes are more informal as RVA892 said. Make-up seems to be totally a matter of preference. My daughter doesn’t wear it to class, but her roommates do. My impression is that Elon is more preppy than most northern and midwestern schools- very little grunge- but not the total conformity you might be imagining.

I am an Elon girl, so I’m going to be honest for your daughter’s benefit. Part of why I chose Elon is because I toured twice and never saw a single person in sweat pants & everyone seemed put together. Girls can get away with yoga pants or gym shorts, but I’ve only seen people on official sports teams wearing sweats. Classy/Preppy is a common way to dress, but I’d say some students have a bit of a laid-back, casual style of dress as well. Your D shouldn’t feel the need to buy a whole new wardrobe to “fit in” but just be ware that you’ll see lots of well-dressed students here & there is some pressure to follow suit.
