ATTN DCIRCLE- Bear Exodus?

Of several Brown neuroscience alums that I’ve talked to, they all mention Mark Bear as an important part of the department. Do you dcircle (or anyone) know how his leaving has affected the department, if at all? Also, why did he move to MIT?
I am planning to study neuroscience and this factors heavily into my decisions this month!

hey supertara,

Mark Bear moved to MIT because they gave him an incredible offer. MIT has recently invested a lot in the Picower Center for Learning and Memory--a process that involved recruiting the most accomplished scientists in the field.

When Mark moved his lab to MIT it was definitely a sad departure because he's a wonderful professor and he's been here forever. But there are lots of great professors in the neuroscience department--all of whom are both very accomplished and great teachers--David Berson, Barry Connors, Mayank Mehta, I could go on and on.

Brown is a great place to study neuroscience as an undergrad. Perhaps better than ever, with the new building, faculty recruits, and NIH funding.

Although Mark is now at MIT, he is still very involved in the department at Brown. Brown's introductory neuroscience course is his baby, and he comes back to lecture on learning and memory every year. He also continues to collaborate with many Brown Professors as well, including my thesis advisor Leon Cooper (in fact, that's how I know him)

(incidentally, if learning and memory is your thing, MIT is a very exciting place to study it right now--you should look into the picower center)

When I took CTY Neuroscience, our textbook was an incredibly huge (for a 14 year old), terrific monster, and it was written by MarK Bear and 2 other Brown professors.

I loved that course, and that's what first got me interested in Brown. :)

hmmmm, what is the name of said textbook, and how might i obtain one?

The textbook is Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain, by Mark F. Bear, Barry W. Connors, Michael A. Paradiso.

I think you can buy it off www.amazon.com.

gracias!.........

Dcircle in one of your posts you mentioned Ryan Roark. She went to my high school, what a small world.
