Hi Parents,
I don't know if this is the right forum to ask your opinion about getting started at NYU...we juts received an email about the university endorsed linen programs - College Dorm Room Bedding & Twin XL Sheets by RHL

I had a look at the prices of their beddings and other necessities and it's not that bad but some parents and students of NYU have suggested to shop at Bed,Bath & Beyond, so to those of you who have been shopping there, is there a difference with the prices compared to the endorsed program?
Please excuse as I've never been to BBB, we are from overseas.

I have found that the prices for things when you have to buy them separately are almost always more expensive. That holds true for so many things. rhl prices are better than bed bath and beyond. They do have some really nice stuff there at bbb though, i personally love to walk around and look at the nice pans and all the cool gadgets. They also always have a sale rack that quite often has some great stuff on it. I bought a noise machine that was 75% off at bbb, just because someone had returned it and it worked great. They are also really good for after holiday sales. Some fun stuff there on super sales after the Christmas holiday especially. I found some cute gingerbread boy cake pans after the holidays one year that were marked down like crazy, i went and gave them to my nieces that like to cook. If you like looking for sales then go to bbb just for fun. To make life easier though, it makes sense to go to rhl and order your basic bedding and bath stuff online. They deliver it and everything is all together in a package. Might as well get everything that you need right at once, especially since it is more convenient and cheaper that way.

I’m an incoming student, and according to my mom, those linens that nyu sells are way overpriced. BBB has better stuff, but if you’re looking for things that are cheaper, Target and Wal-mart will also have what you need.

I would recommend not buying the sheets offered through NYU as they tend to be low quality for the price. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but when my daughter started at NYU there was a shuttle bus looping continuously from the freshman dorms to the Bed, Bath and Beyond store in Chelsea for the first few days after check-in. Target, TJ Maxx and Marshalls also tend to have a good selection of XL twin sheets and other dorm necessities beginning in late June through early September. TJ Maxx and Marshalls both have stores in Manhattan but I think the closest Target store is in Brooklyn.

One thing that we got my daughter that she came to really appreciate was a plush mattress topper/featherbed. The “mattresses” in the dorms are slabs of high density foam covered in a thick vinyl, and while that is a good thing from a sanitation standpoint (impervious to stains and insect infestation) it makes for a less than ideal sleeping experience. I highly recommend buying some kind of memory foam, down or synthetic filled mattress topper or featherbed held in place by a twin XL mattress pad. Your back will thank you.

Just keep in mind that the RHL linen program is “endorsed” by NYU (and many other schools) because RHL pays them for the privilege of gaining access to their email list, not because a single person running the school has ever so much as touched any of their merchandise.

I agree, don’t buy from there. If you want to do catalog and delivery, look at
[Sheets, Bedding, Comforters & Home Decor | Domestications](http://www.domestications.com/)
we’ve ordered from them before and they have good stuff. Also you can go on
[Bedding : Sheets, Linens, Duvets, Covers, Throws…: Target](<a href=“Bedding : Target”>Bedding : Target)
and order to have delivered.
the stuff from the place NYU sends is usually not very good at all

If you do use Bed Bath and Beyond, you can order things for pickup at the NYC store. This saves shipping it all, and the store is very close to Union Square, so pickup is easy, and you don’t have to wonder if they will be out of what you want. There is also a TJMaxx (or Marshalls) right there as well, which has a lot of sheets and towels and such, as well as a container store. Also a K Mart on 8th street, very close to Broadway, with dorm sheets and towels and dorm stuff too. If we didn’t already have this stuff (mine is transferring), I would wait and shop there and avoid lugging it all and trying to figure out what to do with a car in Manhattan. Agree with everyone who commented on the quality of the bedding offers through the school–you can do much better price wise and quality wise at BBB, Target, or the like.
