Audition emails

This happened to us last year so I thought I would pass this along considering the fact that a lot of you will be receiving audition invitations via email in the next couple of weeks. My S applied to 3 schools that required auditions. Berklee's audition was in November. He sent in pre-screens to 2 other schools and was expecting to hear about invitations for those schools at the end of Dec. He received an invitation to audition at 1 school on Dec. 26 via email but never heard from the other. I thought it was strange that we didn't hear either way but I was assuming that he wasn't invited. We couldn't call the school because everyone was on winter break. After school was back in session my husband called the school and they said that in fact they had sent out an email on Dec. 21 inviting him to audition on Jan. 21. They forwarded the email to my S and we were all very excited. Despite having to scramble at the last minute to purchase plane reservations to fly across the country, and book a hotel room, we were all relieved. The moral of the story is to ALWAYS check your spam folder. Especially since schools will be sending out audition invitations in bulk.

Do you mind sharing the names of the other two schools? Just wondering if they may be schools that my D is applying to. She is auditioning this Sat for Berklee. Where did your D end up?

Oops; I meant where did your S end up?

Thanks poprockmom! We had trouble getting the Berklee audition email and had to have it resent. DS auditioned there on Saturday and loved it. Now waiting for the USC prescreen results.

@mamakin - We’re waiting for USC pre-screen results too. Do you know when those are supposed to come out?

Thanks!

Last year USC emails were sent on Dec. 21…I think. The schools were USC (Thornton) and U. of Miami (Frost). He is a Freshman at USC and loves the program!

I just checked my records from last year and on December 23rd I sent my son’s private teacher the list of all the audition dates so my son must of gotten call-back emails about now.** I know that in my son’s case he got most of his college admission stuff via email because he would get it on his phone and text us. In his case he had one account that he only gives out to people he knows and will not be connected with any spam. It was a relatively new account as well.

**By now our son had heard from NEC, Oberlin, MSM and NYU. Our son had not heard back from Eastman. Eastman as I recall was later than all the other schools even with admission acceptances. One frustrating thing was that Eastman and NYU do group auditions and had set audition dates for Jazz. There was not a lot of flexibility in the scheduling. We did a regional audition for Oberlin.

MSM says “by Dec 15” this year. My S is also waiting on Juilliard and Peabody, but I hear that those are usually in January.

Great thing to keep in mind! Thank you!

Also, on the topic of Music School Audition emails, the Eastman one that my daughter got yesterday said something along the lines of “An important update has been made to your application. Please log in to see it.”

She freaked out thinking she had forgotten something, but it was just letting her know her audition had been scheduled for her selected date!

@poprockmom - Thank you for the info. My D has also applied at U of Miami/Frost. She has a friend at USC studying jazz piano. Less than two weeks to hear from both of them.

This is really not that big of a deal, but when my son arrived for his Oberlin audition, they had no record of him being scheduled that day. Luckily he had a copy of the email that confirmed that particular audition date. They were very kind and would probably have allowed him to audition on that day anyway, but it was nice to be able to prove that he wasn’t imagining things. Plus, he was not the only one in that situation. There were several students standing together near the check-in table who had received confirmation emails but were not on the master list that day. I’d recommend bringing a copy of the emails to the auditions if possible.

StacJip - All of our communications with Eastman were later than we expected as well.

My daughter her live audition at Berklee last week and we are waiting to hear from Miami
and USC about pre screens. Please let me know if you hear from one of these schools.

JerseyRockMom

My D had her Berklee audition this past Saturday. She got an email from USC on the 14th saying that audition notifications will be sent out at the end of this week. I expect we’ll hear from Miami before the end of December. I’ll post when we hear something more. Good luck.

It’s very helpful to have a thread like this keeping track of emails. We knew from a similar thread 3 years back that we were missing an email (either a yes or a no) from one of the schools. Not in spam, not anywhere. Having the info from other students/parents let us know it was time to call.

I also know that a couple of years ago a few folks didn’t hear from Berklee on the day admissions emails went out.

Best of luck everyone!

Got a no for USC Popular Music program for D this afternoon. Still awaiting University of Miami.

My D also got a No for USC Popular Music Program for Voice. I know it is very competitive, but does anyone know what the approx. stats are for how many audition and how many are accepted?

She did get accepted to Belmont University for the University portion, but now we’re waiting to hear from the music school. I wish they could have sent those letters together.

We too are still waiting for Miami.

Another no from USC Popular Music for Voice prescreen. My son has done Berklee audition and has Belmont audition next month.

Attended the open house at USC about a month ago. They said about 350 to 400 were expected to apply for popular music. Based on last year’s posts, there were about 100 invited for auditions. Living in LA we had the chance to attend a few pop music showcases. Some might think spilled milk - but was a bit disappointed by the talent level. The only clearly impressive performer left the pop music program to pursue her BA.

No from USC for voice here too. Miami said emails will go out next week, and won’t hear from Berklee until the end of January.

I seem to recall someone telling me that in the past only about 25 were accepted in the popular voice program. If that’s true, that’s definitely very few.

USC wasn’t my D’s first choice, so she wasn’t too put out by the rejection. She said that she was kind of annoyed by it, because she would’ve liked to do a live audition before getting rejected, considering all the work that she put into the app and pre-screen.

If the talent level at the showcases was disappointing, it kind of makes you wonder what they’re looking for in a student.
