My daughter is getting her audition rep together. She has 4 songs to choose from. Most of the conservatories/music departments state that they require 2-3 contrasting songs. My confusion lies in the definition of contrasting. Does it mean they need to be contrasting from different periods or would contrasting pieces from the same period be acceptable? I am not sure if by contrasting pieces the implication is that they would have to be from different periods.
Since I see your user name is thevoicemom… I assume the audition is for voice? My daughter plays the french horn and the audition pieces are different each place. when they speak of contrasting… they mean styles not periods.
Yes, thank you. Should have posted her instrument. I appreciate your help.
@thevoicemom if your D is a singer, this usually means songs that show different skill sets… for instance, think different languages, and perhaps quick/fun as well as something showing excellent legato/long lines. Your daughter’s voice teacher should be well versed in helping her choose some good rep! Definitely be sure to choose songs that highlight your daughter’s strengths (maybe dramatic ability or range) and especially her POTENTIAL! I would suggest choosing some things she is very comfortable singing.
We let our voice teacher choose: one yellow book, one English art song, one Fauré in French, and then the piece Jacobs wanted, another Italian.
