Juilliard, MSM, Mannes, and Curtis only do one set of auditions, and that is within a 10 day period in early March, so they know what their pool is. NEC has several sets of dates in January, February, March, as do CIM, CCM, Peabody, etc. CIM does the April 1 decision, but CCM acts within 2 weeks or so. Lots of variables!

I was kind of surprise to hear from IU so quickly,,,,I really thought I would not hear back from them until April. I called my college (I will be a transfer student, receiving my AFA in Music from my local community college this May) to confirm that they sent my transcript and they did.

I emailed the Jacob School of Music and they confirmed that they received it, so only time will tell.....I still have 5 more auditions left, and IU was a reach school for me. It is indeed an excellent school.

NEC seems to be broken down according to instrument. So, I guess they try to see all prospective piano players in one block, etc. and then make decisions. MSM does not list who is being auditioned on what day, but maybe they do the same thing. They must actually put their heads together across departments, right? To see how players blend? Wow.
DableST--we have two friends at Jacobs and they are so happy. Best wishes to you!

Hi Jazzzmomm. In our experience, primarily with "stand alone" conservatories (not music departments within a university), each department has days and times where they see a number of candidates of the same instrument, e.g. cellists on March 4, violinists March 3 - 5, etc. Those schools such as CIM and Oberlin, as Lorelei mentioned above, offer several audition days to choose from - some days on which all instruments are being heard by the appropriate departments, others may be just for certain instruments. I don't believe they necessarily talk "across departments". I think each department has a target number of students they can accept and offers are made according to the target they want enrolled and their past expereince with offer vs. enroll numbers.

CIM has a list of approximate annual openings for various spots (scroll down page):

Cleveland Institute of Music

Hope this helps. Best of luck - isn't it nerve wracking? Don't know how I survived, but S did fine with it all!

chopsticks, stringfollies--other feb 29/mar 1 audition applicants, IU Jacobs: my S (vocal performance with interest in early music) emailed Jacobs yesterday to ask if his application package was complete (my suggestion after reading DableST's post about her missing transcript--thanks for tip!) and to inquire about notification date for prescreening--they emailed back today to say he'd passed prescreening and was on for Feb 29/Mar 1. So might be worth emailing? Perhaps the squeaky wheel gets (begs for?!) the earlier notification, or Jacobs is waiting to hear Jan auditions? New to this, so I don't know. (He'd been accepted to IU weeks earlier.)

Hey congratulations to your daughter. It can be so nerve racking to wait for these recording results.

S sent an email last week and another one today asking about auditions. There was no pre-screening so that's not the problem. He was accepted to IU before Txgiving.

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!!!

I just received my letter in the mail, and I was accepted at the Jacob School of Music! (The Voice Performance Program as well as the Music Education program) I am on cloud nine now. I still have 4 more auditions left, and then I will make my final decision...Maybe I will see some of you (or your son/daughter) there next fall!

For those of you who have upcoming auditions, break a leg!

congratulations! that is really a great school and great early news!!

Congrats to you.

YAY! Same for me for vocal performance!
So excited!

Congratulations everyone and good luck to those still auditioning!
I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!

hey guys congrats. You all found out pretty quickly too. When did you all audition? I thought most college stuff only came out in March (I didn't do any early action - don't think you can for transfering).

I sent in a CD as my final audition instead of pre-screening. They told me they mailed results to CD auditions the same week as the beginning of January auditions.

My D auditioned at Univ. of Maryland last Saturday. They said we would know by February 15. Fast!!!

Yes, my son auditioned at U. Wisconsin on Saturday and they said 2 weeks. The state u's seem to be very fast.

Congratulations to the three of you! It's just so exciting to know you're in, and to such a great music school, too. Here's hoping everyone has only good news from here on in!

Wow! Congrats to so many talented musicians. My S auditions at IU on Saturday.
