Auditions 07/08

How have the auditions been so far? Discuss your experiences!

Weren't there auditions yesterday? Who auditioned? How were they?

Sorry MChristina, didn't see this here before. I auditioned 11/16. The audition day went extraordinarily smoothly--then again, there was about a third of us there than there would be at any of the other audition dates. We began in the Mendelssohn Theatre in central campus, where a few students talked to us about the program, school life and whatnot from their perspective. After that, Mr. Wagner came in and answered questions, and then we walked over to the Power Center for the dance audition. It consisted of a few ballet barre exercises, followed by a musical theatre combination. We learned the combination as an entire group, then performed it in groups of four. For the entire dance audition, there were two current MT students demonstrating, even when we were in small groups.

The voice, acting, and piano auditions take place in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance building on north campus, a 10- to 20- minute bus ride away (there's a bus stop right outside the Power Center; UM buses are free). Each audition takes place in a separate room, with different faculty in each room. There are practice rooms in the first floor of the building wherein you can warm up vocally, though the auditions happen to be at the busiest time of the day, so, chances are that 99% of those practice rooms will be occupied. You should be able to find an open one, though. The faculty are all wonderfully relaxed, and they do the best they can to make you less nervous. They really want you to do well. If anything, it's difficult to be tense throughout the audition day because the atmosphere is so calm.

That's a pretty basic description of the 11/16 auditions. Again, sorry I didn't see this sooner. Let me know if you have other questions.

I just have two more question, what barre exercises did you do and what was the piano audition like? What did they ask you to do? For piano, I am a beginner, but I know theory, cords, scales, and basic sight reading.

Thank for all of your help, I really do appreciate it.

MChristina, my kid has not yet auditioned, but she did exchange emails with Laura Strozeski in the dean's office. Laura told her that auditioners do not have to bring in a piano piece memorized: instead, the adjudicators will ask the auditioner to sight read and (I think) play some chords, scales and so on.

My daughter, husband and I had an absolutely wonderful time visiting the University of Michigan this past weekend! Wow -- what an amazing program, with amazing students and staff. We were thoroughly impressed! Other than the bitter, freezing COLD which was a shock to our systems (we live in the desert!!).

There were nearly 60 kids there to audition on Friday Jan. 25th, and interestingly, the mix wasn't nearly as heavy on the girl side we expected. It was probably just over half girls. As others have said, the day ran really smoothly, and was well-organized. The summary that asch wrote above is very accurate to our experience as well.

The afternoon information meeting was very helpful. Laura Strozeski, the assistant dean for enrollment, spent close to an hour presenting information and answering a zillion questions. The information we had been given recommended having someone attend this meeting -- either the student, or someone traveling with them. Interestingly, it was ALL parents in attendance. All the kids were upstairs going between their various audition appointments. I was worried that my daughter would be missing something by not being able to be there, but it was actually best that she wasn't!

In the afternoon, the kids auditioning rotated between the acting audition, the piano evaluation, and the vocal audition. The acting and piano seemed to run pretty close to their assigned times, but the vocal got behind schedule as the day went on. It didn't seem to bother anyone, though, as all the kids were hoping THEY would get an extra minute or two when their turn came around. Especially since the time slots for the vocal auditon are only 3 or 4 minutes apart. The last vocal auditioners finished the day at around 4:30 or so. Some were finished as early as 2:30.

Most of the kids sang just one song, and some of the kids said THEY (the student) got to pick which song. However, most of them said that the faculty told them which song they'd like to hear. Some of them were asked to sing both of their songs, and some were asked to sing their first song again, just from a different perspective.

And to reassure any of you -- the accompanist (if it's the same woman) was AMAZING. I didn't hear one complaint about the accompanist. All the kids were very pleased, and said she played their music as though she knew it already. This woman was one of the MT faculty, and after reading her resume, it's no wonder she plays so well.

We did get to meet two of the parents who post here on CC and their fantastic kids! They were absolutely delightful -- it's sure fun to be able to meet real people in this whole process!

I'll post again if I think of anything significant that I missed. Otherwise, I'm happy to answer any questions about our day at Michigan!

I was at the January 25th audition, and I just got notification on the wolverine access website that I will get a decision in the next two weeks. Anyone else?

Hey all! I was just wondering what the dance audition was like? barre or combination? And whats its level of difficulty was...

also what did the music theory test consist of ?

Thanks :)

There's a short, basic barre followed by a combination. The combination was really tough for me, but I'm a terrible dancer--maybe someone else has an opinion? Music theory is just aural; they play a few phrases at the piano and you sing them back. Nothing to worry about.

Also, they give you a short piece to play on the piano. It's a simple, two handed piece. I think that is what epo9 was referring to.

Thank you so much guys! I did not hear much about the UMich dance audition. And thanks for the heads up NotMamaRose- i guess i should start working on my piano skills.... see I've mastered the one handed plucking technique, but two hands will take some work ;)

Hope everyone's future is filled with wonderful news!!!

i was wondering, to anyone out there who HAS been accepted....how did your auditions go?? i realize this means NOTHING but im just curious. i have nothing else to sit and think about while im waiting for my letter!

My D auditioned in NYC last weekend...and JAKE WILSON (the battery's down) taught the dance combination! How cool is that? Her accompanist was the accompanist in the first episode, too.

Bumping thread for i<3MT who wanted to know how the auditions are run.....
