Auditions Junior Year

Can you audition anywhere junior year? Or what should I be doing besides just the basic preparing… Thanks so much!

Check out SETC - South East Theatre Convention. They hold a unified audition every March that juniors can attend. In 2016, it will be in North Carolina. Many colleges and a few summer programs attend. It’s a great learning experience and a great way to meet reps from many programs and get feedback on your audition. May possibly get offers of attendance, including scholarships, to college programs. Even if that doesn’t happen there are many terrific workshops, lectures and performances to attend. My S attended as a HS junior and learned a ton of useful information.

I just posted this under a different thread, but know several rising seniors who just attended the Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE that is held by The Educational Theatre Association ( run International Thespian Society). Selections of monologue and/ or song are presented at one time to representatives from several schools. Colleges then put up call back lists of kids they might want in their program. I know many kids now entering the whole college application / audition process with solid offers from schools like CCM and DePaul and it’s only June.

@limbo2019, are those offers for MT or for acting programs?

I know CCM offered official acting spots to two kids that I know, but I only heard about callbacks for MT. That confused me because my D applied and was accepted to MT at CCM last year, but they didn’t have sort of pre-screen process. I’ll be talking to them and let you know if I hear anything else.

I only know of official acting offers, but looking forward to having more conversations now that the festival is over and hearing more.

I heard the same @limbo2019, two CCM acting offers and MT callbacks. Last year, I knew a girl that got a true blue CCM acting offer, as well.

My understanding is that a “callback” from CCM MT means we are very interested in you, and would like to see you audition. I haven’t heard about them adding a prescreen for the coming year, but it certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility - more and more schools seem to be adding them every year.

Baldwin Wallace is no longer using prescreens though, right?

Really? Why not?

From BW’s website:

That is from the MT page, which is not updated for this year. On the conservatory site, which has 2015-16 info, it says no prescreen.

If they are changing it so quickly that is really interesting. @kategrizz - any inside scoop?

Interesting change in policy since they are also planning to reduce the size of future classes. We are seeing one of the professors next weekend and will certainly ask!

@toowonderful The only inside scoop I have is that D has mentioned that the BW faculty was not happy with the prescreening process, and does not plan to continue it for this year’s auditionees - which means if BW is on your list - schedule your audition early - because the year my D auditioned (before the pre-screen was introduced) I know several students who were not able to audition because they ran out of space to see everyone. But, that’s all I know! Nothing is official until you see it in writing on their website - which has not yet been updated for the 2015-16 audition cycle.

Actually, the website is updated and according to it, it is time to schedule auditions. They have a few more audition days this year than last, and that is probably to accommodate more people since they will not be doing pre-screens.

According to these guidelines, there is NO pre-screen this year.

Hmmm. Interesting.

@Dusing2 - I’ve been checking the production page waiting for it to update for 15-16 - just assuming that all updates would be made at the same time… didn’t realize audition info was up.

Note to 2015-16 auditioners - that November date is going to fill very quickly. The past 2 years they have had 2 back to back November dates which filled quickly - and this year they are only offering one in November - so if you want a fall audition - don’t delay scheduling it. I believe that they are offering more February audition dates than in the past - all double day audition weekends, so all is not lost if you miss out on a Fall audition - but it’s good to note these changes depending upon what your specific plans are.

The website does state NO prescreen for this year - so that is now official.

The nice thing about November audition at BW (in the past, have not checked to see if it is still how they do things) is that if you audition then you get a response (accept/decline, hold/waitlist) in December. It was nice to have some info before the main bulk of dates in Jan/feb. For one of D’s friends it was his top choice, and when accepted in December he cancelled all his other auditions and just got to enjoy his senior year!

^^^I had an advisee who one year also got into BW after the November audition and cancelled the other auditions.
