Leafing through daughter's new issue of "Dramatics" (and being good and overwhelmed...but grateful...for their college guide), we saw a reference to the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Inc, and went to look at their webpage. Daughter is a junior this year, and noticed that they have auditions posted in March for hs juniors and seniors for several college programs. For juniors -- are these screening/practice auditions only, or are students ever accepted into the college programs? Looks a little different than the Unified auditions -- appears that one application (and fee....) grants a student a short slot in front of whatever college folks are present. I am assuming, if one is accepted into a program from this audition, there's still the college apps, etc to do later.... Is it a worthwhile "practice" audition? Anybody have experience (kid or otherwise) with the SETC, especially the college auditions? Finally, we don't live in one of the member states (about 20 minutes away...). Does the student need to live/attend school in one of the member states to audition/attend the convention? Thanks for any insight!

I teach at a school that attends the junior auditions at SETC. I think for most they are a recruiting tool. Most colleges would not be able to accept a student off of only an audition, and colleges will not consider academic applications for HS juniors (unless they are applying to skip senior year and go to college early). Some HS seniors and transfer students audition as well, but since the conference is past the application deadline for many schools in attendance, seniors and transfers will not find as many schools.

It can be a great “practice” audition, and it is a great way to meet with representatives of many different programs, and may introduce students to schools they did not already know about.

I do not know the policy for students from states outside of the south auditioning at SETC, but I am sure if you contact them they will get back to you quickly. They are very nice.

Hope this helps!

My D attended SETC this year as a junior and it was a great experience for her. We live in Texas so she just registered through the website as she did not need to go through a state screening.

If you are thinking about attending, I suggest registering as soon as possible. Your audition number is based on when you register and there are benefits to auditioning early on Saturday. My D was in the first audition group and so her call backs were in the first group posted. That meant more quality time with the school reps since most of the juniors were still auditioing or waiting to audition.

D learned more about some schools she didn’t know much about and really got a feel for whether or not she was interested in adding them to her list. Also, she received a couple of talent scholarship offers this fall from schools who saw her/called her back at SETC! We were surprised but of course pleased to get those letters/emails. And she was able to express interest and get on the radar of some schools early on which was great. Oh, and if you go, go check out the area where the professional auditions are being held. D was waiting for an interview and was in the same area where those were going on. Very interesting to watch and see what is in your future!

I think SETC was well worth the time/expense and so does my D. Feel free to PM me if you need anything else.
