Austin News - Jefferson 26 Residents held at gunpoint by robbers

^ Don’t live in North Campus then. It’s way shadier, darker, and quieter than west campus. There is little foot traffic and there tends to be a lot of poor people living in really crappy houses once you cross like 30th street.

Ground floor apartments also have more chance of being burgled. If you’re up on the fifth floor, and keep your doors locked at all times, robberies are significantly less likely.

^ Damn, my apartment is on the ground floor across from J26. -.- Hope my apartment doesn’t get burglarized. :/

Are you staying at Centennial or Orange Tree? Haven’t heard of any burglaries there in the past year. But 26th street in that area is pretty high-traffic, so you should be fine as long as you’re safe.

I stayed at Nueces Place.

vacheespagnole - Orange Tree. Yeah, it’s on 26th street. I should be fine as long as I’m safe? Lol. But yeah, this will be my first apartment ever and living off campus. Hopefully I won’t have a gun to my head. :/

@Xcellerator: I have friends there who’ve lived there with no robberies for the past two years (knock on wood), but it’s really all about common sense. And what I meant about being “safe” was using said common sense. Don’t be a victim, if you will.

I mean, I hate to generalize, but for some reason people treat West Campus as an extension of campus and IT IS NOT. UT police have no jurisdiction there and there’s no “extra protection” because of its proximity to campus. It’s like people who leave their laptops in the PCL unguarded. For some strange reason, there’s this false sense of security in WC that ends up with people leaving their guard down. I honestly think as long as you don’t leave things out in the open, keep your doors locked, windows closed, your chances of robbery/buglary in WC drops significantly. That’s the thing about crime in WC, they hit hard and fast, and they move on if the apt/car is locked to the next because they will find one that isn’t with such a high student density.

luckily though for you, that part of 26th is really, really high traffic because of the high-rises and the bus stops so i think your chances are even lower of having anything stolen. too many potential witnesses.

Damn X, they got you already? Live on the top floor…

yes frenchplace, a homeless guy wondered by and broke the window from my apartment. although he did not come into the apartment. I now live on the second floor of Black Diamond

Hey Xcellerator, were you the one who took the 750 a month at Orange Tree? I went one day later with my realtor and they said there was already a app

There’s still a unit available at Orange Tree. 3/2 for $1600, though one of the rooms is really like a small study. Just went there today with a realtor.

I saw a Honda CR-V that had been broken into at Centennial’s garage a month or so ago. :(

Is the Orange Tree nice inside? I haven’t looked inside a unit yet but my choices to move into are Orange Tree, Piazza Novena (sp?), and Vintage West Campus

Really I live there and didn’t see anything or hear anything about it. This complex is usually pretty good about letting us know about “crime in the area”. That car must’ve had something good in it maybe like an ipod sitting out.

All of those places are condos, so the amenities and age of appliances vary based on what the landlords have done to the places. Vintage West is sold out until next August iirc, and Orange Tree is almost completely out. The unit I looked had very old appliances, but for the price and location it can’t be beat. Piazza Navona’s condos are only for sale as far as I know, but correct me if I’m wrong on this.

xtra - I took the 2/2 for $1600/month @ Orange Tree. I mailed in my app like 2 weeks ago…Got the one with two story and pretty big rooms.

iambored10 - The Orange Tree was alright. I’m having them change new carpets and repaint the walls and stuff. It did have some older appliances and stuff. I like the fact that it had two stories and more room than Piazza Navona. Even though Piazza is pretty brand new, it was pretty cramped, and I didn’t really like it when I toured the unit (had a dog that made it smelly/messy). And Piazza is a little further away (a block lol). Eh. It was a hard decision.

vacheespagnole - Piazza’s condos are also for rent. I viewed a 2/2 unit that was also for $1600, but nothing paid.

What does anyone know about Vintage West Campus? I already have an efficiency unit for this coming year, but I haven’t seen it in person yet and no one seems to be able to tell me much about it since it’s so new.

okay, I see. no harm there. to Xcellerator

But I am staying on North campus for now to avoid the homeless population.

Although the people living at North campus is overall less economically advantaged, at least they have jobs. I haven’t seen a single transient here at my complex. And I talked with the supervisor of the bus routes two weeks ago (he is the guy who drives the capital metro van near the stadium… you would most likely see him or his van if you rode the buses on 23rd Street), he said that one reason that the homeless tend to gather there was because the charities situated near West Campus. Because west campus has many college students, the people you live do not know who you are. You don’t know your neighbors too well, and if you walk by the streets you do not know whether or not he or she is a resident.

I think many people said you would be with a good management company. I lived in the Castilian with them and they usually took care of their residents. (to the guy living at the Vintage)

iambored10, were you looking at a 1/1 at Orange Tree? The 1/1 my realtor took me had a smoking tenant living there this year, so be on the lookout for that.

iambored10, I will be living at 21 Rio. The price seems to be much lower than when I booked it in June.
