Australian student coming to UMich on exchange

Hi everyone,

I'm a uni student in Australia and I'm planning to come to UMich on exchange next year for your Winter Semester yay!

I just have a couple questions about housing if anyone could help me out please! I know because my situation is unusual you may not know.

How hard it will be for me to get housing on campus in a dorm seeing as I am starting in Semester 2 and I will only be there for 1 Semester?

Do you know where most exchange students live? I would like to live on campus for the experience and for the convenience.

I'm a Senior, so I'd rather not live in a dorm with mostly Freshman as I'd feel old! Are there any dorms you could recommend for me?
From my own research on the forum it looks like North Quad could be a good option as it is only Sophomores +. And also a lot of people have said that South Quad and West Quad have primarily upperclassmen?

However I imagine that as an exchange student I probably won't get much choice/preference in terms of housing anyway.

Thanks so much for your help!! :)

You might want to consider Co-Op housing. They offer one semester contracts, and I know there’s a wide range of students there, usually sophomore and above. [Inter-Cooperative Council](http://www.icc.coop/)

You might find it hard to find a place in University dorms, as they usually only offer 8 month contracts, but it never hurts to contact them. I believe North Quad and Stockwell are mostly sophomores and above. Not sure about South/West Quad.

hey thanks heaps for your suggestions. I looked at the Co Op website before but I don’t really understand what a Co Op is?
I read that you have to do chores each week, but other than that how is it different to dorms?

You live in houses just off campus with bunches of other students rather than living in a huge dorm building. It’s not for everyone but it can be a good option for those who would appreciate the environment co-ops offer.

thanks for your help. I’m still researching housing and something else I came across is Michigan Learning Communities, the Global Scholars Program is open to exchange students.

I had a bit of a read about the Learning Communities but I don’t really understand what it is? Is it like a fraternity and you live on campus?

this has nothing to do with housing but make sure you bring warm clothes and prepare for the cold in any way you can. michigan winter can be brutal, especially for people living in warmer climates. I’ve lived in michigan all my life and I can’t imagine myself living in humid/hot places…
