I've been receiving mixed answers regarding whether or not engineering is impacted for automatic admission to UT-Austin, and I was hoping that CC would deliver!

So yeah, I'm in the top 7% of my class, therefore giving me automatic admission to UT. Also, I pass the Calculus-readiness requirement for being admitted to the Cockrell School of Engineering. Am I still not guaranteed any spot at all in UT Engineering?

Surely, you saw this on the admissions website:

Restricted Admission
Because admission to the Cockrell School of Engineering is so competitive, automatic admission for eligible Texas applicants is restricted to the most qualified applicants. To be considered for admission to the Cockrell School of Engineering, you must meet the school’s Calculus Readiness Requirement.

So there is auto-admission into the School of Engineering? I wasn’t really sure how to interpret that. Also, I’m not sure what chance you’re talking about - chance for what?

I assumed the question was could you be auto admitted to the engineering school. The answer is still yes, there is a chance for your to be auto admitted to the engineering school.

The statement from the website seems clear to me that some applicants are auto admits. What “the most qualified applicants” means is anyone’s guess.

That doesn’t help much, but I am not sure anyone on this forum knows.

what I learned from two children’s apps to UT as well as their friends’: Key word: MATH
If you have stellar math scores on standardized tests and have taken/are taking AP Calculus (have good grades in all math courses)…you will be in the stack of hopefuls for engineering! I have seen students who were not auto admits the last three years admitted to engineering.

I have a quick question! i fit all the math criteria and i’m also top 7%, the only think i lack is high Critical Reading scores. How will that impact my chances at getting into Chemical or Mechanical engineering??

My S top 7%, currently in AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C class and doing ok. SAT math 740. What kind of chance to be admitted in Chem E or Mechanical E?

Publicly available information relevant to anyone’s chances for getting into UT’s engineering program:

1) Avg ACT & SAT scores for engineering – in a recent thread on CC. (University wide averages for non-auto admits is also available, but I’m not sure if it’s available by college. You can always assume that engineering has a similar spread.)

2) The number of students in the state of Texas scoring at or above your score on each test – you’ll need to use Google for this. I found the one for Texas ACT scores, but I didn’t search for the SAT version. (Not every student that scores this high is in the top 7% nor do they all wish to attend UT or engineering at UT, but you can at least cap the number of competitors. You can obtain a second estimate from the distribution of auto admit scores UT publishes. Averaging the two may give you a decent, back-of-the-envelope estimate at the number of potential competitors.)

3) The expected freshman year GPA formula for engineering – in a recent thread on CC. (The SAT based formula uses ONLY class rank, SAT Math, and SAT Writing.) Use an average GPA of 3.0 to gauge where you stand relative to the average.

Dig a little and anyone can construct an intelligent estimate AND know all the assumptions, data, and data limitations involved in that estimate.
